Carnet for a foreign registered vehicle

Hello together,

another Carnet question. All relevant threads I found so far with the HUBB search seem to be outdated.

I (German passport and residency) would like to arrange a Carnet de Passage for a South African registered car (registration on my name but no residency).

So far ADAC declined. Even they did it in the past they will not do it anymore.

According to AA website a South African residency is mandatory. Did not cross check it but even in the unlikely case of processing I don’t think a deposit in Rand is a good investment.

Did anybody recently manage to get a carnet for a foreign registered vehicle or has a hint how to?

Best regards
Bernd

The AA of South Africa should be able to do this, even if you're not resident. Call them (rather than email) - they are helpful in our experience. If still no luck you could look for a contact in RSA who could get the CdP and give you authority to use the vehicle.

Try also the Swiss auto club (I don't recall the name but google this) - they issue CdPs for non-Swiss vehicles.

To answer your question ("Did anybody recently manage to get a carnet for a foreign registered vehicle...?") we obtained a CdP (actually twice) for a UK-registered vehicle in Kenya - we are not resident in the UK.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
