Pannier Latches with Locks - Where to buy them from???
Hi folks!,


Hope you can help. I've had a set of panniers made but the locks that came with them I felt could be easily circumvented. So I'm going to source and fit my own and this is where I need your help.


The research I have done has showed me that the below panniers have decent locks. If you could let me know where I can buy the locks and latches separately that would be great. Some of them I can find the locks but without the latches there useless.

Give Gabriel at Zen Overland a shout - he manufacturers panniers and the set I got off him have a nice quality lock on them. He may sell the locks/fittings if you ask him nicely !

He's quick with his response, just what I like. So the latches he sells are the type that I don't personally trust to hold up to a hammer unfortunately:

To be honest, if someone really wants to get into your panniers that badly they will get in - after all, you normally only need to undo half a dozen or so bolts and the pannier rails (with panniers still attached) can simply be removed from the bike ......

Look at the locks as a deterrent to the casual thief and carry any valuable/irreplaceable stuff with you when you leave the bike !

I disagree with saying that all latches/ locks are the same. It is true that if someone wants your bike badly enough they are going to get it, but in my experience thieves are very lazy. If it takes them longer then a couple minutes to break into something, then they will give up and look for an "easier target."

When I was checking out ruins in Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru I always made sure to park my motorcycle in the highest foot traffic part of the parking lot. If there were kids or adults selling gifts or carwashes I always asked one person to watch my bike and gave them a couple dollars.

Having beefy pannier locks, rotor locks, and an ignition lock gave me the peace of mind to hike around the ruins and truly appreciate the construction and century old history of what I was seeing.

If I had locks that could easily be picked with a screwdriver or a hinge on my pannier, I am pretty sure that I would have spent a lot of the time worrying about my motorcycle.

A good bar will deformed the wire on those latches , but that is not uncommon for that type ,an additional latch for the lock only will deter most without a bolt cutter.

For security that design is terrible. Anyone with a small drill could remove the rivets in a few seconds. If the designer moved the latching bar so it enabled the latch to cover the rivets then it would be more secure.
However, I hope you found something suitable.

Those are the latches on my JourneyRider panniers. So far, none of my customers have had their panniers broken into.

I think it comes down to common sense.

A thief with a cordless drill and the (right size of carbide drill bit) lol, is probably going to have a cordless angle grinder too.

Hey Conan, did you ever find what you were looking for?

I would love a set of latches/locks like the ones in the Touratech boxes. They act as a hinge or lock and seem sturdy

The Journeyman and Moose racing ones look very similar
Moose Racing will not sell spare parts

All I need to do is find a supplier

I'm guessing the catchplate is the part vulnerable to a swift blow from a hammer. However, I would imagine that a catch plate with the hook facing inwards would resist such attack .
