How do we get out of Chile in time?
Hi,

We are three guys travelling through South America. We bought a bike each in Santiago two weeks ago, and following the thread "how to buy a used motorcycle in Chile" we were expecting to get our Padrons 5-7 days after. When we went to the Registro Civil after 7 days, we were told that we couldn't get the padron before two weeks after the Solicitud de Tranferencia were given to us. We then decided to stay in Chile a week more than planned and headed south towards Pucón. Today we went to the Registro Civil 16 days after our Solicitud de Transferencia were printed but was told that we had to wait another 12 days for our Padron.
We are kind of on a tight schedule and can't afford to wait in Chile for so long, since we also want to see the other countries of South America before going back home. We were also under the impression that other people have done this before, but much faster.
How can we get into Argentina and then into Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and back into Chile without waiting this long for our padrons?

I think you guys may be screwed.

Recently, within the last 6 months at least, I've read several travelers accounts who bought bikes in Chile ... and who then had ALL KINDS of problems getting their paperwork in a timely manner. I do believe you can travel within Chile on your bikes, but can't cross borders, but maybe there is a way? I would at least try.

This is exactly why now, many travelers have decided NOT to buy a bike in Chile. Better to buy a bike from a traveler, but if you're only doing a short trip, then not sure what you do.

The delays are CLEAR obstructions put up to SLOW and discourage foreigners from getting legal paperwork. It's all just stupid ...

I disagree that the delays are aimed at foreigners, it is just their system. And unless you know how to push and probe it to move it along, that is your problem not theirs.

The problems I had in 2012 were of my own making (impatience) but at least I got into Argentina and Bolivia before being denied by Peru.

Okay,
We have been told that we can print our padron from the Registro Civil's website. Does anyone know how it works, and if it is possible to print it from Argentina, if we can cross the border without the padron?

I don't believe you can pass the border without the padron.

Why do you just not print it out in Chile ?

You could do worse than visit the office that prints them, and sit there and insist on it (on a daily basis).

I used my Solidad de Primera Inscripción thinking it to be the padron to get into Bolivia and Peru, and only realized when Chilean boarder control in Jama asked me for otherwise. I guess you could try it if there is no alternative? I feel for you, as I had to wait five weeks or so before my actual RUT card turned up, and having already bought the bike couldn't get it plated with the temporary peice of paper they give you (that you use to buy the bike in the first place), but thankfully I had plenty of time so it mattered not.

We have decided to stay in Chile until we have the Padron, so we won't get any problems at the borders. We of course hoped for a quicker way, but it seems like there is really nothing to do about it.

Post urgent padron needed? what to do?
Hi everybody! After doing the mistake and paying a notary to do the transferencia we waited 2 months for the padron. They forgot to give a copy of our temporary RUT and never checked what had happened with our paperwork...
Anyway, we went to the main Registro civil, and after begging to do the padron faster she told us we can go to the Offices of the Registor civil, Huerfanos 1570, i think, not sure about the number, sorry. We explained to a friendly guard, then to a lady on the phone that we have to leave asap, and we alredy waited 2 months, so we did a 'Solicitud de urgencia', explain why you need it urgent, use google translate for help and prepare your text.

So we got a registration number for our solicitud and a phone number, which we called 2 times in the next 5 days, and voilà, it was done!
Hope this helps somebody else as well!
