I go down to that area a lot - (our "Euro home" is about 20 miles from Bardonecchia) and Belgium - Lux - Germany - Switz route just takes forever - particularly the Swiss part - unless you use the motorways. I almost always go down through France now but, apart from the area round Calais, use the regular N roads.
Door to door for me is about 15 hrs (from Oxford and including the ferry) using the motorway all the way and costs about £60 in tolls (car - bit less on a bike) - so one long day. Using the N roads mainly takes a day and a half. You save the tolls but you have whatever the cost is for an overnight stop.
