I've done this twice at two different border crossings. That is, on a UK-registered bike - south to north.
1. September-1 2007: Chief Mountain - Montana into Alberta
2. May-22 2008: Niagara Falls - New York into Ontario.
Back then it wasn't a problem on either occasion. Just rocked-up on the bike with passport, V5C certificate and evidence of motor insurance and I was over and in.
Any forms that were required they supplied, although I don't re-call there being too much (if any) onerous temp importation paperwork. The process couldn't have been quicker or less painless. Charming Canuk border officials ..
