Sorted.
I pulled the rubber boot aside, undid the nut and pulled out the plunger thingie from the carb. Interestingly a previous owner had soldered the cable end to the plunger to repair it, quite a neat job.
Anyway, some jiggling and squirting with WD40 substitute seemed to do the trick, though I had a niggling idea that I should just have cleaned it is petrol instead. The choke works better now than it's ever done. I love that kind of repair.
