Stuck choke on 3AJ
 

My 3aJ Tenere has a stuck choke, it seems to be stuck on and the problem is down at the carb, there's no movement of the cable down there. I'm hoping that waggling it around and squirting it with WD40 type stuff will do the trick, but wondered if anyone else has had this problem before I get stuck in?

I had a very similar problem with my 3AJ about a year ago. It turned out to be the brass plunger starting to corrode into the carb body. I manages to wriggle it out having squirted it with WD40 , by undoing the nut that holds it into the carb body and pulling on the cable.

I cleaned off the corrosion, polished it up and smeared it lightly with a light oil and it has been fine since.

Probably best to get it apart as soon as possible, before it gets really stuck,

The rubber boot over the plunger had cracked and corrosion had welded everything together.
It took lots of WD and serious persuasion to get it out. But i got it.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go tomorrow if I don't get my fingers frozen off. I want a garage... I'll let you know how it goes.

I pulled the rubber boot aside, undid the nut and pulled out the plunger thingie from the carb. Interestingly a previous owner had soldered the cable end to the plunger to repair it, quite a neat job.

Anyway, some jiggling and squirting with WD40 substitute seemed to do the trick, though I had a niggling idea that I should just have cleaned it is petrol instead. The choke works better now than it's ever done. I love that kind of repair.
