Unless you have an engine problem, your filter is going to be clean. Only water or a major engine problem could clog it really but the XT is air cooled so no worries.
I do filters second.. Even third.
You can still take it out and check it even if you don't have a new one. If you're really careful, you can even clean out the old one.. If you really have no choice.
The contaminations in the filter can't get out again. It only flows one way.
If you want to be super careful and not have to think about it, for the few quid a filter costs, just do it anyway.

Good to know Ted, cheers for that. I usually change every 2nd oil change, as instructed by manual, but sometimes wondered if I should change each time.
