Hi Guys,,, how much oil does my 2003 xt take from empty. just gonna change the oil an leave the filter to the next time.

Look on the side of the case. Most Jap bikes have it near the sight glass or oil fill.

Dont be cheap and save 5buks on a filter, oil and filter cost you nothing compared all you spend in a year for having a bike. Take care of engines they are not cheap fixing! Buy 3liters and you have enough, 3TB had 2,8l with filter. Anyway you have to check after 2,5l so it gets correct.

Same here , new filter every oil change , not even an option to not.

I've never had anything in my filter (I've cut it open to check), and change it about every second time.

I think thats what yamaha says in the hand book Jens. I change the filter in my car whenever i change the oil too. All down the personal preference I suppose.

You only really to change them when you think oil flow could be hampered if it get's clogged or gunked up.

Unless you have an engine problem, your filter is going to be clean. Only water or a major engine problem could clog it really but the XT is air cooled so no worries.

I do filters second.. Even third.

You can still take it out and check it even if you don't have a new one. If you're really careful, you can even clean out the old one.. If you really have no choice.

The contaminations in the filter can't get out again. It only flows one way.


If you want to be super careful and not have to think about it, for the few quid a filter costs, just do it anyway.

Good to know Ted, cheers for that. I usually change every 2nd oil change, as instructed by manual, but sometimes wondered if I should change each time.
