My XT600's got this nagging sound..

Greets, everybody.

As the title suggests, I own an XT600E 2002 with 145k kms and a rebuild at 80k. There's this ticking sound I keep noticing lately (or it's just my anxious mind). Any mech wiz able to confirm/disprove this?
I included a YT link as I couldn't figure how to manipulate my mp4 file.

Thanks loads!

Just check it by moving the arm up and down with your fingers, if you hear a tick it needs some adjusting

Sounds a lot like piston slap . Seems a little low pitch for valves . Is it louder cold then quiets down as the motor heats up or maybe gets worse when hot than cold?

Doesn't sound bad to me, bearing in mind singles tend to sound like a bucket of bolts anyway when they get a bit miley.

If it worries you drain the oil and if there's no excessive metal there's no problem. Also consider adjusting the cam chain.

When fired up for the first time in a day it sounds pretty clear and fine. Unfortunately I live in the f*cking city and work the wageslave crappo so the bike gets a lot of traffic time. So it's "worse" when hot. I'm visiting a mechanic tomorrow to get an on site verdict aswell.

well, with 65K after the rebuild it's not that surprising that the engine is not exactly quite.... doesnt sound particularly bad to me but hard to say more with ytube sound quality. using a screw driver as an stethoscope can help you pin point the source of noise. old trick from my british singles days.

Hi,
If it wasn't checked, maybe adjust the timing chain tensioner. Could be as simple as that.

Guys, better late than never. I reduced the idle speed and greatly improved the "acoustics". (Also did a clutch change since the discs where reduced to thin rings). All in all, the bike operates much better now and I believe it's due to getting the idle in the correct rpm.
Well, looking forward to the next rebuild

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
