shortarse biking in Australia

Living in Australia (from the UK) for a few months want to buy a bike to travel up east coast from Melbourne and hopefully get into the outback and find lots of dirt tracks to have fun on so looking at a dual Purpose bike. Tried out a drz 400 and think I could handle it with the lower seat etc. But would this bike be suitable, friend trying to push me towards v Strom but I have been told they are quite heavy and generally am just not keen on the bike even though it may be good at what am planning to do. Have also been looking at 650gs maybe Honda Transalp. But I love the DRs and think they would be a lot of fun. Cons: Not the best for miles on the road and would I get all my kit on? My plans are vague with regards to distance each day and route. I like to go with the flow and stop over when and where I feel. Any views welcome. Do you think DR is a no go?

DR650 is the go with a safari tank.

Search google for lowering the bike (if needed) but i know a short girl who manages just fine in stock set-up, they are fairly low anyhow.

Thankyou, I ride a hornet at home I think there is a couple inches of difference. Any problems with on road for durations of my trip or being able to strap enough luggage on?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
