I would be very surpised if anyone suggested that the bike you intend to use is not a good idea.
The Kwaka KLR650 is indeed a great bike capable of hard-core RTW trips.
Although personally I think the venerable Yamaha XT600Ewould tick all your boxes even better than the KLR (but I'm biased aren't I). The XT series of bikes are simply legendary RTW/African adventure machines.
Seriously the KLR650 is an awesome RTW platform.
BUT I WOULD KEEP IT AS STANDARD (OEM) AS POSSIBLE. Leave the wheels alone they are fine as they are - Apart from the usual brake/suspension/Bash plate/Larger Fuel tank upgrades which are needed for a RTW trip.
A standard KLR does most things perfectly well.
