Many people have ridden to Mongolia on all sorts of bikes and there is no ideal model, just personal preference. Decide what sort of trip you want, how you will cope if it all goes wrong,( injury, repairs etc) and then take it from there. For me, a lighter bike and less stuff worked. The roads in Mongolia AND Kazakhstan are every bit as appalling as everybody says and you will fall off/drop your bike, bend it, bash it etc, however good a rider you are. It was a blessing for me too when I fell off and broke my wrist - i was able to keep going which I don't think i would have been able to do on a meatier bike with more gear.
