The procedures must have changed. It looks like the Australian Automobile Association just added another page to the carnet. It has a field which needs to be stamped out by Australian customs when leaving Oz and stamped in when returning.
It also states on the cover letter that it has to be stamped in order to get the deposit back.
Also Perkins (shipping agent) only accept it "stamped out".
The whole carnet thing must be different in every country. In Australia they did not even future date it. Apparently it is against the law. In Germany it is common practise to future date a carnet, I believe up to 30 days...
