Afghanitsan is not a country to enter casually. A lot of research, planning and preferably in-country contacts required.

A couple made it to the border a year or two ago, but the Pakistani authorities would not let them leave. I did it in 2009 and drove across Afghanistan.

You won't meet the Taliban at the border. The area around Jalalabad is not so safe these days.
If you want to visit Afghanistan it used to be possible to enter from Tajikistan and go to the Wakhan Valley but I am not sure if this is still the case.
Possible and done infrequently. But it's not safe to go further into Afghanistan
