Crash Protection for Aluminium Panniers?

Greetings from Southern Spain,

I have an XRV750 with Aluminium panniers on - they are 2mm welded custom jobbies.

When the bike falls, the front bottom corner is the first part to hit the floor, along with the bike's handguards.
During a slide down an asphalt road a couple of months ago in Morocco, the aluminium has had a fair portion of the thickness worn away.

Has anyone tried any sort of protection for the panniers?

I'm thinking:
- Additional alu plate welded on
- Steel plate riveted on (but I'm reluctant to drill my otherwise very watertight boxes)
- Plastic (sheet or 3D printed), epoxy-ied on
- Is there anything commercially available that fits the bill?

Opinions please!

Attached are some pics of my box post- & pre-slide.

Hi

You could use double sided sticky tape on a strip of nylon, or look for the corners used in flight cases or aluminium music boxes.....

Or leave it just the way it is, call it a battle scar and have a story to tell about it.

Much more interesting and genuine and importantly " WEIGHT" saving

Just keep riding and enjoy the view infront.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
