Very good advice here from ALL SIDES! Patience is the key ... yes, it's a chore and then you've got to travel to go look at the bike and test ride.
I know in Oz lots of guys do serious Off Road riding on the DR's. This is pretty rare in USA. I would not buy a used DR that's been hammered across the Simpson Desert or such.
Wait for a nice Virgin. IMO, it does not matter much if it's an older DR650 ... as long as the Kms are fairly low and it hasn't been beaten on. Anything that is 2006 or newer is just fine. Try for 10K km. or less if possible.
For reference, I've got 60K miles on my 2006 DR650. NO issues.
Extras are important, a seat being primary add on to consider if doing serious riding. Suspension is next up. Expensive to do it right ... but 100% worth if going off road or riding a good pace loaded with gear.
Good luck in your quest. Be ready to pounce with cash when a good deal presents itself.
