DR 650 value

Hi a friend of mine wants to sell me his 2011 DR650 with 44.000 km for $4100 Australian Dollars. Am wondering if that is a fair price. The bike is in a good condition only used for long distance rides across Australia. He would also service it before.

Was wondering because considering I can get a brand new 2017 DR650 for 8000 AUD in Australia.

Thanks

These are tough bikes and I doubt that there is anything wrong with that bike.

I don't know what the market is like over there but I'll tell what it's like here in Colorado. Brand new 2017 DR650 lists for about US 6500. You could probably find a nice, stock, late model, say 2012 -2015, with less than 5000 miles, for US 3500-4000, about 2/3 of the new price.

For a bike with 25,000 mi (40,000 Km) I think the price would be more like US 2000 - 2500, a bit less than half of new price. So his price is not too far out of line.

One thing in his favor is that he has presumably added a bunch of stuff: skid plate, barkbusters, luggage, racks of some sort, hopefully done some suspension work, added a bigger gas tank, etc. All that can add up to a couple of thousand dollars, and is something you would have to do to a new model to make it into a decent travel bike.

Personally, I wouldn't buy the brand new one, and I wouldn't buy the one with 28,000 miles on it either.

What I would do, and I've done it twice now, is buy a low mileage, totally stock used bike and spend my 'savings' buying exactly the add on's that I wanted.

There are some smoking hot deals on new DR650's at the moment in Canada, I can go buy a new 2017 for 6,156.33AUD or 4,656.37USD or 3,440.65GBP (5,999CAD here + PDI & Taxes)

https://www.themilezero.com/collecti...2015-dr650sel4

BUT I would always buy a lightly used, low mileage model with some aftermarket parts already added and let someone else pay the PDI, taxes and take the depreciation hit.
Like Shu, I think 44,000 kms is a little on the high side, I bought my '09 ( in 2010) with 7000 kms for $5000 cash, Id personally keep looking out for a year or two old bike with low kms and an aftermarket seat, tank and other add ons. Hold out until after Christmas if possible - generally a few bikes pop up then.

Thank you for your replies.

Yeah I think i will keep looking.

At the end he was asking for 4400 including roadworthy certificate. BUT excluding any ad on's such as bigger tank and racks.

On the other hand it appears that in Australia cars and motorcycles don't loose value as quick as in America or Europe, simply because of the smaller numbers. When checking on Bikesale sites it seams that, that would be about the price.

Regarding waiting till after Christmas. I reckon it would not make a big difference because summer just started here Down Under, that would put the prices up.

PS. nice equipped DR shu... :thumbup1:

I didn't mean anything to do with weather, just generally people are broke after Christmas and sometimes sell their toys :)

Your mates price is about average but on Bikesales you can always grab a better buy if you are prepared to travel.

THIS ONE 2013 with 8000k`s & possible may take $4500?

Mezo.

Yeah, that's what I'd be looking at, too. Pretty much stock, 8,000 Km, with a bash plate: that's a good place to start. (I'd get rid of that windscreen as soon as it was in my garage.)

Very good advice here from ALL SIDES! Patience is the key ... yes, it's a chore and then you've got to travel to go look at the bike and test ride.

I know in Oz lots of guys do serious Off Road riding on the DR's. This is pretty rare in USA. I would not buy a used DR that's been hammered across the Simpson Desert or such.

Wait for a nice Virgin. IMO, it does not matter much if it's an older DR650 ... as long as the Kms are fairly low and it hasn't been beaten on. Anything that is 2006 or newer is just fine. Try for 10K km. or less if possible.
For reference, I've got 60K miles on my 2006 DR650. NO issues.

Extras are important, a seat being primary add on to consider if doing serious riding. Suspension is next up. Expensive to do it right ... but 100% worth if going off road or riding a good pace loaded with gear.

Good luck in your quest. Be ready to pounce with cash when a good deal presents itself. bier
