I haven't but I start next week and I'm wondering which stove to take.
I favour a little burner that screws onto a butane bottle. Do they have these screw thread butane cans in Southern Africa. The bayonet sort are no good to me.

Gbags,
The primus multi fuel is a great compact stove, it's kinda pricy but always works and will burn just about any fuel

Heading north from Cape Town and currently in Rwanda. Ethiopian visa is still a problem, no recent reports of any of the African country embassies issuing them instead all say get it through your home country. I personally was refused at Pretoria and Harare in last couple of months so my passport is currently on its way back to Australia via DHL (it's going to be a very expensive visa by the time I get it back).
I'm still trying to work out how I'll finally get my bike to Europe. Frieght out of Egypt seems possible but very painful experience. Option of going Sudan - Saudi currently not available as Saudis are not issuing visa due to spat with Iran ( I know of somone currently stuck in Sudan because of this). Oh the joys of travel.

Hi Navalarchitect
Hope you are enjoying the trip.
When are you expecting to hit Cairo? I am likely to want to fly/ship my bike back to Europe 1st week of Sept 2016. If that fits with your plans let me know and we can explore if there is a batch deal to be done!
I had a quote of £1295 to London.
Cheers
Andy

Please keep us posted on the ethiopia visa. I am currently in Livingstone, Zambia. I would love to find a way to get to europe by May/June, but it just seems unlikely with the visa situation.
I am interested in shipping the bike as well.

Voodoochile.se is the single most useful blog/resource I've found for doing a west coast Africa trip (and he's soon heading up the east coast). There are numerous practical sections for border crossings etc, as well as a blog. If you're traveling along the west coast, I would definitely check this out:

I'll be in Uganda the next three weeks, then heading south. Unless I return to Kenya and then head south. ;-) I'm working on a film, Rallying for A Wild Life, that shows how motorcycles/bodas are used for wildlife/conservation in East Africa. It's star-studded including Ted Simon and the usual crowd of misfits. ;-) If anyone hears of a relevant project OR is volunteering at some animal kind of place LET ME KNOW! I don't get the bike for a few weeks but when I do....
NavalArchitect, you still heading north?

Hi Andy,
Definitely am enjoying the trip.
I have to do it a bit ahead of your planned date due to carnet running out (plus need to go back to work to earn some more travel funds). Looking like I'll ship out in April (anyhow else reading likely to be shipping at this time? )
Where did you get your quote from / do you have any contacts in Egypt.?
All the best
Martin

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
