Fellow riders - any recent updates on visas? Specifically: Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya, Algeria.

What is the easiest route for a US citizen from Kenya to Tunisia or Morocco? I need to get into Europe.

cheers

Heading north from Cape Town and currently in Rwanda. Ethiopian visa is still a problem, no recent reports of any of the African country embassies issuing them instead all say get it through your home country. I personally was refused at Pretoria and Harare in last couple of months so my passport is currently on its way back to Australia via DHL (it's going to be a very expensive visa by the time I get it back).

I'm still trying to work out how I'll finally get my bike to Europe. Frieght out of Egypt seems possible but very painful experience. Option of going Sudan - Saudi currently not available as Saudis are not issuing visa due to spat with Iran ( I know of somone currently stuck in Sudan because of this). Oh the joys of travel.

Hi Navalarchitect

Hope you are enjoying the trip.

When are you expecting to hit Cairo? I am likely to want to fly/ship my bike back to Europe 1st week of Sept 2016. If that fits with your plans let me know and we can explore if there is a batch deal to be done!

I had a quote of £1295 to London.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,

Definitely am enjoying the trip.

I have to do it a bit ahead of your planned date due to carnet running out (plus need to go back to work to earn some more travel funds). Looking like I'll ship out in April (anyhow else reading likely to be shipping at this time? )

Where did you get your quote from / do you have any contacts in Egypt.?

All the best

Martin

Quote was from James Cargo Martin - drop me a pm with your email address and I'll send on my email exchanges with them if it would be helpful. They suggested i get in touch again 6 weeks before my 'shipping' date.

I don't have an Egypt contact hence using these guys to sort.

Cheers
Andy

I did the east route with two friends in 2014.

Starting from Frankfurt/Germany our course took us through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece to Istanbul/Turkey. After an air transfer to Sudan we crossed Ethiopia and Kenia all the way down to the border to Tanzania. We didn’t enter Tanzania yet but took a detour back north circling the Lake Victoria via Uganda and Rwanda. From Rwanda we continued south again through Tanzania to Malawi. From there we headed south west crossing Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia before we finally arrived in South Africa where we reached our final goal Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope.

You Can find a detailed route and infos on our blog.

Cheers Daniel

Please keep us posted on the ethiopia visa. I am currently in Livingstone, Zambia. I would love to find a way to get to europe by May/June, but it just seems unlikely with the visa situation.

I am interested in shipping the bike as well.

Voodoochile.se is the single most useful blog/resource I've found for doing a west coast Africa trip (and he's soon heading up the east coast). There are numerous practical sections for border crossings etc, as well as a blog. If you're traveling along the west coast, I would definitely check this out:

I'll be in Uganda the next three weeks, then heading south. Unless I return to Kenya and then head south. ;-) I'm working on a film, Rallying for A Wild Life, that shows how motorcycles/bodas are used for wildlife/conservation in East Africa. It's star-studded including Ted Simon and the usual crowd of misfits. ;-) If anyone hears of a relevant project OR is volunteering at some animal kind of place LET ME KNOW! I don't get the bike for a few weeks but when I do....

NavalArchitect, you still heading north?

Yes I am. Currently just left Murchison Falls NP in Uganda and heading generally in Kampala direction before going into Kenya. Hope to cross to Ethiopia around about 20th Feb (assuming the Ethiopian embassy in Australia issue the visa in a next couple of days and then DHL get the passport safely back to me)
