assurance médicale et assistance moto

Bonjour,

Merci D'avance

Good morning,

I have read all the posts relating to this subject but they are all quite old and very Anglo-Saxon.
I'm making my first solo trip far away on a motorbike so sorry for my newbie questions...and not having taken enough notes during the dedicated conference in September at the HU ;-)

My current body does not cover me in Peru (only in green card countries, therefore Europe).

I am therefore looking for medical and repatriation insurance which will cover in the event of a major problem: the costs of search, rescue, care and possibly repatriation and then the rest. Of course with the motorcycle as the main means of transport...and off road

I am also looking for "assistance" for the motorcycle who can take the motorcycle to a place of repair (and me with it if I am well) in the event of a problem: small accident, breakdown etc...
I'm leaving for less than 3 months.

I am eager for your advice

Thanks in advance

Isabelle aka Zazzz

Mark

Glad you've been searching through existing posts, but sorry it hasn't been helpful.

Medical and repatriation insurance varies by home country; what I can purchase in the US will be very different from what is available to you in France (I assume). In fact, in the US insurance varies by state--this may also be true about different regions or departments in France--and by other factors, like age and, as you've noted, activity. It may be that someone from France will post a reply here, but I'd encourage you to do your own research regardless, as indeed I do even after reading through the HUBB.

Having said that, one possible place to start would be with the banner ad at the top of this page: "Ripcord Rescue Travel Insurance." At least one other travel insurance company advertises here, too. I'd strongly suggest reading the fine print on any insurance policy to make sure it includes what you're looking for, including medical evacuation. I'd be less concerned about coverage of minor medical issues, since in Developing Countries these are usually easily and cheaply paid out of pocket.

Peruvian liability insurance is required, but sometimes difficult to find upon entering the country. As far as I know, it is not available online in advance, but this may have changed since I was there. Virtually all riders will forgo any sort of breakdown or road service insurance, since if needed it can usually be arranged casually on the spot--again, cheaply and quickly. Unlike the EU, this will not be included in a basic liability insurance policy anywhere in South America.

You don't say how you're getting yourself or a motorbike to Peru, but if you're buying or renting from a company accustomed to dealing with foreigners, they will presumably be able to advise you.

Hope that's helpful, and hope you attract some France-specific responses!

Mark

Merci beaucoup Marc,

Hi Zazzz,

Indeed the equivalent of KASKO insurance (to get the bike evacuated to a place where it can be repaired) is not really something you are likely to find in South America. I think you just have to assume that this is something you would need to arrange yourself if it happens, by asking locals if there is someone with a truck available. One tip is that it is usually very useful to go into a high-end hotel and ask the desk concierge to help you - they are people who know how to solve such issues in the area, or at least where to start looking.

For medical evacuation and repatriation insurance that would be relevant to (I assume) a French citizen, you should ask an insurance broker in France. Not an insurance company, but an independent broker that knows what other companies offer and can help you put together a policy.
