Have you guys looked into STA Travel? I'm American and have used them for two long rides through South America and Africa. Though I didn't have to file a claim, all seemed in order with STA's coverage and services. They’ve been around a long time.

I'm now shopping for a new policy for Africa ride #2 and STA again looks like the best bet. The STA Explorer Plus package provides $100K medical and $500K medevac at $289 for 12 months with 0 deductible. They also have a standard plan for as little as $33 (yes, $33) for six months, based on your up-front prebooked costs i.e. plane flight. Though that policy cannot be renewed, and a new policy cannot be opened unless you are physically in your home country.

I also looked into World Nomads and HCC MIS... both are a lot more expensive for the same $100K medical coverage. Ruled them out anyhow because they don’t cover one of my destination countries, Sudan, whereas STA does.

Maybe I'm missing something ...??? -- I'm no insurance expert by any means ... but from what I can tell STA seems like a solid and affordable option.

Their website does suck and can be confusing especially for generating a quote. I called them and a rep addressed a couple of questions and supplied PDFs of coverage documentation that I couldn’t find on the site.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
