Ecuadorian Motorcycle Transfer in Bolivia

Hey there,

I legally purchased a motorcycle in Ecuador back in February—all the paperwork is in my name—and what I'd like to do at the end of the month is give it to a friend to ride north back to Ecuador where he should have an easier time selling it for close to what it's worth than I'd be forced to here or in Chile/Argentina.

My question is: is there any way for me to legally transfer ownership of this Ecuadorian bike to my friend here in Bolivia? If not, is there any kind of contract or proof that will suffice so that he may cross borders? I have some contacts in Ecuador that should smooth out the sales process once he gets there, but I'd like to be assured he'll make it before I saddle him with a bike that's stuck in Bolivia.

Thanks in advance!

Ecuadorian bike needs an Ecuadorian PODER between you. A little late for that.

"Smooth out the sales process"... yeah, I've lived 40 years in South America...

In English we call that 'greasing"....

Thanks for the reply! Possibly with my contact from the dealership in Quito he can arrange this PODER? He has a contact in Ibarra that hooked up my matricula when it proved too time-consuming int he big city... Would that count as greasing?

A PODER is the OWNER of the motorcycle giving power to someone else to do whatever with that motorcycle. The trouble with that is that the notary who makes the document has to VERIFY that YOU are the owner by going into the archives of the Government Registry of the origin of that motorcycle (not just look at the papers, that could be forged). A foreign notary cannot do this.

Thus YOU would have to do this in Ecuador.

Believe me, I have tried this!

But do you think a notary in Chile would be able to verify a contract between us that would allow him to cross borders? At least then he can make it up to Ecuador and maybe sell it illegally there to somebody with enough grease to register the bike in their name...

You can try... but it would be a huge loss of cost for your friend to fly all the way down, then it not work..
