insurance
Hello, Leaving Seattle in July and getting ready to blast off to Mexico, Central, and South America for six to ten months. It seems health insurance is reasonable, but I have yet to find a policy for my motercycle (r1150gsadventure.) Would appreciate tips on where to find a policy, if its possible, for my bike. Thanks so much.

I had an insurance from a company called "United american underwriters". Well I don`t acctually know where their head office ist, I got it from an agency in Germany called "K.H. Nowag Versicherungen"
Maybe that that helps you.

I hop around for 7 month now on my motorbike through South America without insurance. Ik made my own certificate. Nobody has ever asked questions abou my insurance.

When I arrived from Tokyo in Santiago de Chile I went to the Automovil Club de Chile. For me they phoned every insurance company but without result. At the end they wrote a letter in which they declared that everything was tried but that it was impossible to get an insurance.

The only 2 companies that I know of in North America that will sell you insurance for Mexico are Sanborn insurance www.sanbornsinsurance.com

or American Motor Association.

Sanborn also sold me insurance for the rest of Central America with the exception of Guatemala City.

I seem to be having the same issue...don't know wether its a good idea to get it or not or if I can! I've had my license suspended for 6 months and seems like many companies wont touch anyone who ticks yes tot his question on the forms - doesn't seem to matter that I've never had an accident in my life or that I have years of no-claims and such!

Very anoying as it makes me think twice about going, if the worst happens and I hit someone I'm in deep s**t!

Anyone had any exprience with this situation?

Hi Boz,
If you hit someone you'll be in deep s**t, no matter what. Therefore, don't hit someone, and don't let someone hit you. After travelling through some 120 countries during the past eight years, I bought insurance only when I absolutely had to, e.g. green card in Europe. Never bothered in South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In Central America I was forced to buy in Costa Rica. In Mexico, for example,insurance is not mandatory. I do have health insurance, because I'm a relatively old boy (68), and if I should fall off the bike awkwardly, I may have to ship my battered body home, and this can get expensive. With the bike: I figure if I get in collision with someone, it will be their fault, and they will have to pay for me. For me it's all part of the adventure.

Thanks Werner!

Very hard getting past the guilt of not having insurance after being told for so long that its
manditory! I guess comman sense is the best policy, just didn't and don't want anything to stop me from doing this journey - sold everything I have like many to do this so accepting that I wont get insurance for the bike is another thing I'll get used to!

Here in Chile is not possible to get an insurance for a bike and this is because the insurance companies decided that we are not a good bussines for them.

Spoken like someone who only worries about themselves and neither those they injure or those who follow.

If enough riders do not carry insurance where it is required it will only serve to make it more difficult for future riders in that area.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
