Yep, I reckon the most interesting side of the continent is the west. In the northern areas my preferation is NW Argentinia, but don't miss some of the high mountain passes leading to Chile, the highest being 4.800m. And the Atacama desert has very interesting places like Valle de Luna, or the geysir at Tatio.
The best bet is, as stated above is to go south on one side of the Andes and back on the other side. The Carretera Austral is very scenic. So is the Ruta 40. But don't just follow the main route south (or north), but travel up into the mountains even if it's just a cul-de-sac. Very rewarding. The glacier parks in the south are magnificent both in Chile and Argentina.
