Argentina TVIP Change

In December 2022 Argentina changed the maximum time a tourist could operate/park a motorcycle in Argentina from 8 months to 3 months, the same time as the 3 month tourist visa secured at borders or ports of entry.

That is the bad news, the good news is that Argentina has extended the "interdiction" process rolled out during the pandemic so a tourist in country on a tourist visa can have her/his foreign plated motorcycle "interdicted" and park it in Argentina indefinitely. Once interdicted, the motorcycle cannot be moved.

The process is time consuming - a week to ten days, maybe a little longer but very doable. Elisa and I assisted with many "interdictions" for tourists with foreign plated bikes during the pandemic. The tourists were able to park their motorcycles in Argentina indefinitely, legally leave the country, return, remove the "interdiction" and be issued a special TVIP good for ten days. The ten day TVIP was issued to allow the tourist time to exit Argentina. Once out of Argentina, the tourist can return to Argentina secure another 3 month Argentine tourist visa and a 3 month argentine TVIP.
TVIP = Temporary Vehicle Import Permit.

At first blush Argentine officials explained to me that the 8 month TVIP was cancelled because too many foreign plated motorcycles and vehicles were being dumped or illegally sold in Argentina. I am following up on this obviously superficial explanation. I am sure there are deeper motives, perhaps pressure from legal Argentine motorcycle dealers.

I just learned from a very recent South American thread that a tourist has been denied a TVIP and tourist visa because he did not have valid motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance has always been required by law, and proof of insurance has generally been required upon entry. This is nothing new.

Anyone experiencing problems obtaining an 8 month TVIP in Argentina now knows why. Since December of 2022 there have been no legal 8 month TVIPS for tourists. The complete "interdiction" process will soon be laid out on our web site. I am still in consultations with Argentine officials.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
