Argentina TVIP Change

In December 2022 Argentina changed the maximum time a tourist could operate/park a motorcycle in Argentina from 8 months to 3 months, the same time as the 3 month tourist visa secured at borders or ports of entry.

That is the bad news, the good news is that Argentina has extended the "interdiction" process rolled out during the pandemic so a tourist in country on a tourist visa can have her/his foreign plated motorcycle "interdicted" and park it in Argentina indefinitely. Once interdicted, the motorcycle cannot be moved.

The process is time consuming - a week to ten days, maybe a little longer but very doable. Elisa and I assisted with many "interdictions" for tourists with foreign plated bikes during the pandemic. The tourists were able to park their motorcycles in Argentina indefinitely, legally leave the country, return, remove the "interdiction" and be issued a special TVIP good for ten days. The ten day TVIP was issued to allow the tourist time to exit Argentina. Once out of Argentina, the tourist can return to Argentina secure another 3 month Argentine tourist visa and a 3 month argentine TVIP.
TVIP = Temporary Vehicle Import Permit.

At first blush Argentine officials explained to me that the 8 month TVIP was cancelled because too many foreign plated motorcycles and vehicles were being dumped or illegally sold in Argentina. I am following up on this obviously superficial explanation. I am sure there are deeper motives, perhaps pressure from legal Argentine motorcycle dealers.

I just learned from a very recent South American thread that a tourist has been denied a TVIP and tourist visa because he did not have valid motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance has always been required by law, and proof of insurance has generally been required upon entry. This is nothing new.

Anyone experiencing problems obtaining an 8 month TVIP in Argentina now knows why. Since December of 2022 there have been no legal 8 month TVIPS for tourists. The complete "interdiction" process will soon be laid out on our web site. I am still in consultations with Argentine officials.

Thanks for that update Ed. That (Interdiction process) is potentially great news! I would hope they would streamline the process though! As you will recall, getting our COVID era interdictions was reasonably straight forward, done in a day after some groundwork on our part (and help from you). But removing the interdiction was ridiculously difficult due to almost laughably stereotypical Latin bureaucracy, and after the fact (but not at the time) I can add, LOL. It took over two weeks. But if this process can be made more streamlined and less opaque, it could be a boon for travelers looking for a way to store their bike in SA for an extended time.

Jim, always good to hear from you. Yes, Argentine bureaucracy can be/is frustrating. Elisa is in direct contact with both EMBA and AFIP and discovered when tourists are denied the 8 month TVIP coming into Argentina they are being advised about the "interdiction" process. My guess is an enterprising bureaucrat is creating an "interdiction" fiefdom or perhaps law makers want the alternative to the 8 month TVIP publicized. Someone in power (?) wants long term tourist parking to live on in Argentina.

Do you remember Zack, the French Canadian who parked with us during Covid? He retuning in September to pick up his bike. We are assisting and carefully monitoring his progress with the "interdiction" removal process. I will post updates.
Javier and Sandra are helping Zack with transport out of Argentina.

Meanwhile, great to hear from you. We are at our ranch in Flagstaff - let's meet somewhere in the States before we return to Argentina. Elisa and I rode to Clearwater, Florida and back - 5,000 miles on secondary and mostly shady tree lined routes, except through Texas. Riding was restricted to dawn until 11 AM because of a severe heat wave. We purchased white mesh "summer" jackets that helped keep us cool.

We miss you two and Eddie. Did you stay at his hotel in Colombia? Keep in touch.

Information Needed

More negative reports are coming in. If any foreign tourist entering Argentina on a foreign registered motorcycle has obtained or been denied an 8 month TVIP during 2023 please post here the name of the border, the approximate date and YES, I obtained an 8 month TVIP or NO, I was denied an 8 month TVIP.
Thank you, this information might help others.

Argentina offers an "interdiction" process for foreign tourists who want to park motorcycles entered into Argentina on a TVIP for longer than the 3 month TVIP issued at the border. Obtaining the "interdiction" takes a couple of days and releasing the "interdiction" takes about a week.

February 14, 2024 an 8 month TVIP for Argentina was issued for an overlander arriving by ferry to BuqueBus terminal, Buenos Aires, Argentina from Uruguay. This has been validated.

I've been obtained for 8 month VTIP on Paysandú - Uruguay - Argentina border in Feb 2023. But i was travelling by car.

Can you explain me, how can i leave Argentina with car left in it? (i'm pretty sure, it is same like Bikes)

I've been today to AFIP, Aduana, they told me, that i have to bring one local, and to make a paper, that he will be in charge of my car for time of my absence. And only if i have critical circumstances. And only for a predetermined period of time.

It was in San Martin de los Andes.
It seems to me, that officer wasn't deeply immersed in the issue.

Argentina TVIP Change

I am pretty sure you can leave with no issues, AS LONG as you return and then exit the country with your vehicle before the expiration date on your TVIP. No one checks for your TVIP at the airport.

However, IF you plan to be out of the country past the expiration date of your TVIP, then the process they explained to you is correct. This process generates an “interdiction” or “suspension” of your TVIP. Many people (including my wife and I) were able to obtain this during COVID. The difficult part is 1) having a convincing circumstance that warrants the interdiction (very subjective I suspect) and 2) finding a local willing to take the responsibility for your vehicle. In our case, the aduana officials did contact the person we left our motorcycles with and came to inspect them, and this was months after we had left the country.
