Tizi Maison d'Hotes,
Telouet.
31.29114, -7.24206
On Booking.
Would normally avoid Telouet but warm welcome from English speaking matey, with en suite rooms preheated for us and a good feed. Wifi.
Bikes in the lane but fine. 350dh pp HB iirc
Auberge Raha,
Alemdoun
31.42915, -6.20257
Large bare rooms with mattress on the carpeted floor, no sheets, shared ablutions, plain dining hall a bit grubby. Meal was OK.
Not effort made, just a repurposed spare building adjoining family dwelling. No wifi and overpriced at 300pp HB.
Would try the other gite in Alemdoun next time or continue down the Valley of Roses road where there are loads more.

Lovely place off the beaten track as good as it looks on its website, pool, wifi, great food, terraces, bikes inside, interesting village.
We paid 500dh HB. Looking forward to going back.
Serdrar Camp, south of
Tazzarine

serdrar-camp.com
On booking, a few kms of dirt to get there from either side.
Been wondering about this place, a large compound in the middle of the desert south of Tazzarine, as there is not much in that town. We stayed in large tents with ablutions nearby. Normal rooms also available.
Popular with other travellers and vanners it seems. Food was great but felt a bit artificial, like a holiday camp.
450 HB iirc
Maison d'hôte Tamatart, west of
Kelaa
31.18438, -6.21156
On Google maps in a tangle of villages, but just off the old MH14 route.
We spent 3 nights here as a base for western Saghro, a family home so comings and goings and small en suite rooms with a cozy European touch. Bikes inside. Good wifi, great food. Tour of the old town. Sons speak English. 300dh HB was a great deal.
Gîte Aoujdade
Taghia
31.7889, -6.07386
On Google, 8km from Zawaiat
I tried to ride the few miles here from ZH in 2018 but was told it was mules only. Either that rule has changed or they've built a track.
Not sure we stayed at the place we reserved, but hard to tell in sunless Taghia, a striking valley head or cirque ringed with monumental cliffs and popular with climber. Rooms with ablutions outside, meal was good, wifi was found (no 4G here). Amazing stars. A bit of an experience. 300dh HB
Tighremt Assif Melloul,
Anergui
32.02551, -5.93565
anergui.com/gite-atlas
Lovely looking place with a bit of class at the south end of the valley. No signs but warm welcome, loads of great food, roof terraces and lounge areas. Rooms are small and dead cold in Feb (no heating). No wifi but 4G. A bit flasher than the other gite in the main part of Anergui. We came from the south down the new, near-finished track.

Auberge Tissadrine,
Dades Gorge, near the base of the hairpins
31.52198, -5.92907
On Booking
Stumbled on this hotel in a dark and on spec after a very long day. Didn't quite believe 300dh HB, but that was the low season Jan Feb price I paid (normally 500 and still worth it). Warm welcome, heating, English spoken, great food, small en suite rooms with much needed heating, overlooking the river and a cozy interior. Parking. There are loads and loads of places along this popular gorge; I was dead lucky to find this one. Bloke I met later stayed nearby and had usual tourist trap run around.
Kasbah Tifoultoute
Ouarzazate west
30.92659, -6.99031
Passed this striking hilltop place many times and, like a gullible tourist, was curious. Not anymore. Checked it out in Dec at 250HB, seemed OK, faded grandeur and incongruous elements. In Feb 250 agreed, but jumped to a ridiculous 600 next morning until we showed them booking.com at nearly half that. And as expected, meal was the worst I've had in Morocco which takes some doing. Settled on 450 HB.
Tigmi Dar Sami, Bine Ouidane/Azilal
32.09971, -6.46476
Half a day’s drive east of RAK and on the ‘metro Morocco border’.
It’s not like ‘southern’ places and could be in Spain.
Nice views over the near-empty reservoir, food was good, rooms were cosy. wifi was OK. Small portal in the entry gates was needlessly annoying with bags. Park outside.
470dh on Booking + tax, plus 150 for the dinner.
There are other similar priced options on Booking along the lake’s north shore to Ouaouazaght.
Auberge Agoudal, north end of Agoudal
32.01675, -5.48131
Has improved since we last stayed here in the 90s but, as elsewhere, leaving a young lad in charge won’t give the best impression. He called someone to agree on
400d half board, but could only be bothered to make an OK tajine. That was it.
En suite rooms are fine, with air-con/heaters, and lounge is cozy with a wood burner. All-night barking dogs.
Next time might try the Citoyene, next one down on the left.
Riad Nomad, Foum Mharech
30.74514, -4.55297
Was intrigued by this remote place at the mouth off the Mharech gorge, east of Tafraoute Sidi Ali.
We crossed the chott in a dust storm with the aid of GPS, arriving at the classic room-rimmed courtyard garden riad perched on a rise and with big rooms, slow (satellite?) wifi (4G worked).
580d half board off Booking.
Warm welcome but unusually a bit plain; not sure it deserves the 9 rating on Booking apart from location on a clear day. Starters in the austere dining room were warmed up, keftas were disintegrated, but brekkie was the usual spread.
Later we passed an auberge not far at the other end of the gorge; might be worth a look next time.
Kasbah Erg Chebbi
31.18246, -4.03196
North end of the erg, away from the throng and right by the dunes. Attached to an abandoned block but nice enough, seemed popular and warm welcome. Food was good; Small en suite rooms OK; wifi in the lounges.
460d on Booking (nearly half price) was about right. Food was 120d, iirc.
Scores of places all around here of course; KEC was good enough for quick overnight.
Otherwise, research more closely for somewhere special.
Carrefour des Nomades, before Mhamid
29.82927, -5.66393
We couldn’t pin down a good last-minute place in Tagounite, so hoped for the best heading for Mhamid, a place I’d avoided for 20 years.
Carrefour by a car junkyard was
650d plus dinner on Booking that night. Would not normally go this high. Same price quoted on arrival iirc, but we were too tired and Mhamid prices seemed crazier.
Nice enough kasbah style, usual bathroom issues, wifi downstairs only, food was good. Definitely not a 650d joint but I see their website quotes €53 HB.
Next morning we were given a 930dh bill for two rooms half board - so
485d each. A fair price so would recommend.
Kasbah Assia, Foum Zquid
My usual cheapie, Auberge Iriki seems to have lost its mojo, post Covid.
Wanted to try Hiba by the oued but price has gone nuts.
Never noticed this one just off the roundabout; seemed very popular.
Chummy but slack bloke in charge, our last-minute, stuffy windowless, en suite rooms were off the dining room (others may have windows outside), wifi hit and miss, bed exceptionally hard even by Moroccan standards. And food was the blandest tajine I’ve had in years. Very rare that happens. Breakfast was a buffet.
380dh on Booking + 120 for the meal. Park nearby.
Not bad, especially if Ibrahim's resto by the roundabout is open late.
Jnane Leila, Route de Ourir, a few km south of RAK
31.55931, -7.97819
Looked good online but last Nov we were thwarted by not uncommon Booking directions which were miles out (full and quick refund).
This time a hefty 860d a room + 300 for a quite good non tajine meal. Outside looks rough but lavish garden and pool inside, gloomy welcome, a couple of other guests. Rooms have a lounge and their own wifi routers (9mb download!), nice sheets, heaters but usual bathroom issues (broken toilet seat; shower mount found outside in the bushes!). Good coffee with brekkie buffet. Park outside. All-night barking dogs.
One of many resort-type places in the sprawling flat area south of the airport.
Still looking for a good value place with easy airport access to return a rental.
Auberge Ennakhil, Nekob 30.86605, -5.85540
Right on the road east of town. Bought by a developer? and much changed since my last stay in 2008.
Now 12 still small en suite rooms but with nice touches. Dining area a bit plain (by Moroccan standards), small pool on terrace, inside parking, great view to old Nekob and north over the remains of the palmerie to the mountains.
Food was a la carte (rare in the south) and
100d a go; rooms are 350d or '€35' on the website.
Staff speak English. Good place to know in Nekob.
Riad du Sud, Tamsahelte (Tazzarine) 30.82018, -5.66146
Traditionally built auberge on the edge of the village a mile off the main road (signage a bit vague).
Bargain at just €13 on booking ($50 on
www.riaddusud.net). Big evening meal cost about the same.
Warm welcome from Zaid (French only), a/c/heater, comfy bed, rustic features, shady gardens, park moto inside.
Good place at booking price as not many options in Tazzarine. Tracks from here lead to Ait Ouazik and Tafetchna gap.
Z Hotel, Meknes 33.8414, -5.5212
Dead easy to find, right on the N13 opposite fuel stations when coming into town from the south, just after you cross the A2 east-west motorway.
575d on Booking where it's oddly lowly rated. Looks like a 4 star to me with everything working except wifi in the room (on some devices). Resto does non-tajines which is a break, but you'll pay European prices. Great breakfast buffet included.
A handy place to know, reachable from Chebbi area via N13, then a shorter day to Tan Med via A2, R405 (fast and easy) and A5.
