Have stayed at all these places in the last couple of weeks. The photos of the places on Booking.com etc are very well presented as to be expected, and most places are looking a little tired to say the least! That said they were all pretty clean and did not need to complain about anything. At the end of the day you get what you pay for and most are quite remote. The food was a pleasant surprise and was so cheap! I would happily stay in all of them again, as the hosts were friendly and accommodating.

Hotel Figuig closed and padlocked shut today.

Will have a look at some of the other options after lunch...

Hotel by the petrol station in Figuig is even more grim than it used to be. No showers at all so we camped out in the desert.

Apparently Hotel Figuig had problems with the local authorities hence the closure.

Has this place closed down already? Link no longer works and their website won't accept booking enquiries. Pity. Could have been useful!

'warden': Don't think so, there's an entry on iOverlander from the end of last year about a hotel in the port complex

'mike giles': It's alive on booking.com.....Onomo one...

A list from my 2023 trips

Asilah - Hotel Sahara.35.46746, -6.03165
Less than a windy hour from TanMed, this is a classic, old style cheapie. Nicely tiled, room 100d are tiny with a bed, sink and a coat hook. Breakfast not included (cafe other side of the block) + a good seafood round the corner they say.
You can park moto in the yard next door for a small tip.
Handy cheapie to/from the port; i stay here regularly.

Hotel des Ambassadeurs, Gueliz, Marrakech. 31.63795, -8.01769
Tried them all in a 5-min range and this massive-looking place is the most OK that's 2 mins walk from Loc 2 Roues moto rentals.
Corner of busy junction, ask for a quiet room off the street or listen to wheelieing moto hoons all night.
Biggish rooms, TV, a/c, balcony, wifi works in the room; toilet attached to the floor, towels etc.
Breakie is a big buffet. Resto never tried. Some cheapie cafes in the backstreets for lunch/dinner; pricier tourist places on the main drags, Change bureau round the corner. 550/650d depending on who's at the desk.
Parking in the basement garage, but one time I noticed my bike (under cover) had been meddled with. Now I park at Loc.

Taliouine - Auberge Askaoun (the one on the north side)
About 300d half board and now with air-con/heating.
Small rooms. Great food.
Bikes can park inside, good wifi, Hamid know his pistes.

Igherm
The hotel Anzal on the corner - packed with the town's menfolk watching footie - claimed no rooms this time.
The hitherto always closed Rendezvous round the corner (30.0894, -8.4604) was open but notably much less popular with footie fans or anyone. Bloke in the cafe below tried hard to put us off. Up we went.
Ablutions are Lynchian and afaict, the rooms/sheets are never cleaned either. As someone else said, you tend to sleep in your clothes/s-bag.
Bloke left in charge missed the hospitality module BUT... a sink in the room and like the Anzal, it's just 50D pp. As cheap as they get.
Grin and bear it; wait for the dawn.

Foum Zguid
Like a lot of places post covid, the bloke at Auberge Iriki, down a side street south end of town (30.07747, -6.87111) seems to have lost interest.
Old style rooms are biggish, car park inside, wifi got there in the end, food was a bit slack but 200D HB is fair enough.

Tamnougalte (Agdz)
Always nice to pop into the welcoming Kasbah Itrane (30.6751, -6.3938), even when not on tour with the bikes. 3-400/500D HB.
Wifi, but not in rooms, big parking, pool & terrace, cats, occasional alcohol, pterodactyls, amuse bouche.

OZT (west)

Kasbah Zitoune is pleasingly far from town (turn south @: 30.9229, -6.9906, easy to miss), takes cards with a fee, has alcohol, moveable wifi and big rooms where everything works/is present, but new owners and now 650d HB for 2024 – a bit ripe for my tastes. Pool and hamman added. Pulled a silly stunt: meat tajine brought out - then 'a special extra from the chef!' was announced with much fanfare: a place of veggies. Will find somewhere else in OZT.

Auberge Tigmmi, Ijoukak (30.98561, -8.14999)
A handy 110km from Marrakech or 35km from Tizi n Test with rustic rooms great food, wifi and warm welcome from Housseine. Damaged in the earthquake; reopened March 2024.
260D HB

Adam Park, RAK (31.5962, -7.98976)
Relatively palatial resort spread out south of Marrakech, 10 easy mins from airport. We grabbed a twin room off booking for 90 euros (usually much more). Everything worked everywhere. In house Italian resto was one of the best meals we had. Breakfast is a seriously lavish buffet.

Auberge Tazolt, Sirwa (1800m) (30.7857, -7.7762)
New looking auberge/hammam serving a handy area, about 10km north of Askaoun.
Elevation nearly 1850m so bring a hat. En suite rooms and interior are plain, but plumbing worked. Courtyard for bikes.
Berber guardians barely speak French, but warm welcome as usual. Phone only: 06 56 66 91 62
250d
dinner 70d
brek 30d
We stopped in for a lunch a week later too with prior notice.
50d for a salad & omelette. BYO vache.
Great tracks in all directions.

Hotel Hagounia, El Ouatia (Tan Tan Plage) (28.4908, -11.3370
Easy to find right on the seafront and opposite the camping. Wifi, TV, fridge.
Park on the pavement (we were in a car).
Breakfast extra but a cafe/resto on the street level or more up the road.
Was £24/20 on Booking for a double. Great value.
Seaview was extra but we got one anyway.
Town restos are a 10 min walk north or hotel resto will do you what you want.

Dar Imrane, Tata (29.7562, -7.9771)
Dar Imrane, Tata
Tranquil place at the top end of Tata by the big oued.
On Google Maps and phone number on the door.
212 6 62 05 02 86, darimrantata@gmail.com
Unfinished building behind the wall/gate can look off putting (knock next door to the north) but down in the garden they’ve built a nice mud brick courtyard compound with 3-4 rooms.
Omar is your solicitous host speaks good french.
Parking space + shade in the courtyard and outside under cover.
New ablutions, twin room shares, double room is en suite.
Great food but no cheaper than Relais Sables down the road.
Wifi.
350d with brekkie (about the same price on Booking).
Dropped to 300 for more than a night.
3 course meat tajine 150d (veg 70d).
All done out with thoughtful touches but tbh a bit pricey compared to the modern, en suite Relais which is a safe if unadventurous bet down the road.
Double room a week or two later was 1600 2 nights half board.
In town the old Renaissance may have have an overdue exterior makeover but didn't go inside.

40km up the road I checked out the gite in Tleta Tagmout.
Been there for years and it's showing it and looking a bit tired.
Non en suite rooms but could be a gite of character.
Woman was not able to give me a price nor able to contact anyone who could.
I'd guess 150d.

Kasbah El Mehdaoui, Skoura west (30.9997, -6.5701)
About 15 mins out of town, overlooking the Dades (bridge and car ford). Garage for bikes. Bloke speaks English.
Small a/c rooms on the roof terrace with river view spoiled a bit by the railings. Food was large amounts.
300dh hb

Aguim
Dar Zara on the N9 RAK-OZT N9 road about 10km south of Aguim (fuel).
So 140km from RAK; 54 to OZT.
Looks a bit rough from the outside but you get what you pay for inside.
Someone's home, not a purpose built auberge.
Wifi and 5+ en suite rooms round a central lounge/eating area
Dinner was usual tajine but plenty of it.
We paid 1500D half board for 7 pax in 4 rooms.
On booking and google, etc. maps.

Assa. M d’H Sirwaji
On the edge of the mostly ruined ksar overlooking the burned out palmerie, a very nicely restored plain adobe maison d’hotes with room set around courtyards.
A couple of doors down from a similar but more rustic place I stayed in years ago.
En suite mud rooms with good bedding and abutions. Off road parking for a car or two. No wifi and host may not speak much French.
We paid 520d half board direct for just a veg tajine (1 course) which seemed a bit much.
Would be 400d on Booking + food.

My list from Jan–March 2024

Tizi Maison d'Hotes, Telouet.
31.29114, -7.24206
On Booking.
Would normally avoid Telouet but warm welcome from English speaking matey, with en suite rooms preheated for us and a good feed. Wifi.
Bikes in the lane but fine. 350dh pp HB iirc

Auberge Raha, Alemdoun
31.42915, -6.20257
Large bare rooms with mattress on the carpeted floor, no sheets, shared ablutions, plain dining hall a bit grubby. Meal was OK.
Not effort made, just a repurposed spare building adjoining family dwelling. No wifi and overpriced at 300pp HB.
Would try the other gite in Alemdoun next time or continue down the Valley of Roses road where there are loads more.

El Khorabat near Tinejdad
31.49453, -5.08548
elkhorbat.com
Lovely place off the beaten track as good as it looks on its website, pool, wifi, great food, terraces, bikes inside, interesting village.
We paid 500dh HB. Looking forward to going back.

Serdrar Camp, south of Tazzarine
30.72154, -5.47574
serdrar-camp.com
On booking, a few kms of dirt to get there from either side.
Been wondering about this place, a large compound in the middle of the desert south of Tazzarine, as there is not much in that town. We stayed in large tents with ablutions nearby. Normal rooms also available.
Popular with other travellers and vanners it seems. Food was great but felt a bit artificial, like a holiday camp.
450 HB iirc

Maison d'hôte Tamatart, west of Kelaa
31.18438, -6.21156
On Google maps in a tangle of villages, but just off the old MH14 route.
We spent 3 nights here as a base for western Saghro, a family home so comings and goings and small en suite rooms with a cozy European touch. Bikes inside. Good wifi, great food. Tour of the old town. Sons speak English. 300dh HB was a great deal.

Gîte Aoujdade Taghia
31.7889, -6.07386
On Google, 8km from Zawaiat
I tried to ride the few miles here from ZH in 2018 but was told it was mules only. Either that rule has changed or they've built a track.
Not sure we stayed at the place we reserved, but hard to tell in sunless Taghia, a striking valley head or cirque ringed with monumental cliffs and popular with climber. Rooms with ablutions outside, meal was good, wifi was found (no 4G here). Amazing stars. A bit of an experience. 300dh HB

Tighremt Assif Melloul, Anergui
32.02551, -5.93565
anergui.com/gite-atlas
Lovely looking place with a bit of class at the south end of the valley. No signs but warm welcome, loads of great food, roof terraces and lounge areas. Rooms are small and dead cold in Feb (no heating). No wifi but 4G. A bit flasher than the other gite in the main part of Anergui. We came from the south down the new, near-finished track.
350HB

Auberge Tissadrine, Dades Gorge, near the base of the hairpins
31.52198, -5.92907
On Booking
Stumbled on this hotel in a dark and on spec after a very long day. Didn't quite believe 300dh HB, but that was the low season Jan Feb price I paid (normally 500 and still worth it). Warm welcome, heating, English spoken, great food, small en suite rooms with much needed heating, overlooking the river and a cozy interior. Parking. There are loads and loads of places along this popular gorge; I was dead lucky to find this one. Bloke I met later stayed nearby and had usual tourist trap run around.

Kasbah Tifoultoute Ouarzazate west
30.92659, -6.99031
Passed this striking hilltop place many times and, like a gullible tourist, was curious. Not anymore. Checked it out in Dec at 250HB, seemed OK, faded grandeur and incongruous elements. In Feb 250 agreed, but jumped to a ridiculous 600 next morning until we showed them booking.com at nearly half that. And as expected, meal was the worst I've had in Morocco which takes some doing. Settled on 450 HB.

Tigmi Dar Sami, Bine Ouidane/Azilal
32.09971, -6.46476
Half a day’s drive east of RAK and on the ‘metro Morocco border’.
It’s not like ‘southern’ places and could be in Spain.
Nice views over the near-empty reservoir, food was good, rooms were cosy. wifi was OK. Small portal in the entry gates was needlessly annoying with bags. Park outside.
470dh on Booking + tax, plus 150 for the dinner.
There are other similar priced options on Booking along the lake’s north shore to Ouaouazaght.

Auberge Agoudal, north end of Agoudal
32.01675, -5.48131
Has improved since we last stayed here in the 90s but, as elsewhere, leaving a young lad in charge won’t give the best impression. He called someone to agree on 400d half board, but could only be bothered to make an OK tajine. That was it.
En suite rooms are fine, with air-con/heaters, and lounge is cozy with a wood burner. All-night barking dogs.
Next time might try the Citoyene, next one down on the left.

Riad Nomad, Foum Mharech
30.74514, -4.55297
Was intrigued by this remote place at the mouth off the Mharech gorge, east of Tafraoute Sidi Ali.
We crossed the chott in a dust storm with the aid of GPS, arriving at the classic room-rimmed courtyard garden riad perched on a rise and with big rooms, slow (satellite?) wifi (4G worked). 580d half board off Booking.
Warm welcome but unusually a bit plain; not sure it deserves the 9 rating on Booking apart from location on a clear day. Starters in the austere dining room were warmed up, keftas were disintegrated, but brekkie was the usual spread.
Later we passed an auberge not far at the other end of the gorge; might be worth a look next time.

Kasbah Erg Chebbi
31.18246, -4.03196
North end of the erg, away from the throng and right by the dunes. Attached to an abandoned block but nice enough, seemed popular and warm welcome. Food was good; Small en suite rooms OK; wifi in the lounges.
460d on Booking (nearly half price) was about right. Food was 120d, iirc.
Scores of places all around here of course; KEC was good enough for quick overnight.
Otherwise, research more closely for somewhere special.

Carrefour des Nomades, before Mhamid
29.82927, -5.66393
We couldn’t pin down a good last-minute place in Tagounite, so hoped for the best heading for Mhamid, a place I’d avoided for 20 years.
Carrefour by a car junkyard was 650d plus dinner on Booking that night. Would not normally go this high. Same price quoted on arrival iirc, but we were too tired and Mhamid prices seemed crazier.
Nice enough kasbah style, usual bathroom issues, wifi downstairs only, food was good. Definitely not a 650d joint but I see their website quotes €53 HB.
Next morning we were given a 930dh bill for two rooms half board - so 485d each. A fair price so would recommend.

Kasbah Assia, Foum Zquid
My usual cheapie, Auberge Iriki seems to have lost its mojo, post Covid.
Wanted to try Hiba by the oued but price has gone nuts.
Never noticed this one just off the roundabout; seemed very popular.
Chummy but slack bloke in charge, our last-minute, stuffy windowless, en suite rooms were off the dining room (others may have windows outside), wifi hit and miss, bed exceptionally hard even by Moroccan standards. And food was the blandest tajine I’ve had in years. Very rare that happens. Breakfast was a buffet.
380dh on Booking + 120 for the meal. Park nearby.
Not bad, especially if Ibrahim's resto by the roundabout is open late.

Jnane Leila, Route de Ourir, a few km south of RAK
31.55931, -7.97819
Looked good online but last Nov we were thwarted by not uncommon Booking directions which were miles out (full and quick refund).
This time a hefty 860d a room + 300 for a quite good non tajine meal. Outside looks rough but lavish garden and pool inside, gloomy welcome, a couple of other guests. Rooms have a lounge and their own wifi routers (9mb download!), nice sheets, heaters but usual bathroom issues (broken toilet seat; shower mount found outside in the bushes!). Good coffee with brekkie buffet. Park outside. All-night barking dogs.
One of many resort-type places in the sprawling flat area south of the airport.

Still looking for a good value place with easy airport access to return a rental.

Auberge Ennakhil, Nekob 30.86605, -5.85540
Right on the road east of town. Bought by a developer? and much changed since my last stay in 2008.
Now 12 still small en suite rooms but with nice touches. Dining area a bit plain (by Moroccan standards), small pool on terrace, inside parking, great view to old Nekob and north over the remains of the palmerie to the mountains.
Food was a la carte (rare in the south) and 100d a go; rooms are 350d or '€35' on the website.
Staff speak English. Good place to know in Nekob.

Riad du Sud, Tamsahelte (Tazzarine) 30.82018, -5.66146
Traditionally built auberge on the edge of the village a mile off the main road (signage a bit vague).
Bargain at just €13 on booking ($50 on www.riaddusud.net). Big evening meal cost about the same.
Warm welcome from Zaid (French only), a/c/heater, comfy bed, rustic features, shady gardens, park moto inside.
Good place at booking price as not many options in Tazzarine. Tracks from here lead to Ait Ouazik and Tafetchna gap.

Z Hotel, Meknes 33.8414, -5.5212
Dead easy to find, right on the N13 opposite fuel stations when coming into town from the south, just after you cross the A2 east-west motorway.
575d on Booking where it's oddly lowly rated. Looks like a 4 star to me with everything working except wifi in the room (on some devices). Resto does non-tajines which is a break, but you'll pay European prices. Great breakfast buffet included.
A handy place to know, reachable from Chebbi area via N13, then a shorter day to Tan Med via A2, R405 (fast and easy) and A5.

My list from March 2023

Melilla
https://www.melia.com/en/hotels/spai...uerto-by-melia
Hotel Melia Puerto, Melilla is not in Maroc, but if you come from the 21:00h ferry from Malaga -> Melilla it is a good option. Good hotel, central location, big rooms, secure parking in the hotel garage. There are cheaper options, but securing the bike overnight is a "must have" for me. Not all hotels are open in the early season.

Missour
Hotel Titanic is like the boat, a bit of a sinker. I got here in the dark from Melilla and it was the only place I could stay with some restaurants around it. It is above a modern looking cafe made out of shiny metal and glass, but the rooms above it are not so shiny. Shower is a laugh, hot water is extra. I had to bargain hard. The owner spoke English. Bike was parked inside the front bit of the cafe. Can't remember the price, but I think it was arond MAD150 incl. breaky. Funny enough I had a really good sleep, I still remember it :-)
Only stay here if you must. I know now that a few km further South there is a hotel called Gîte touristique in Ouled Boukhalfa, which might be a better option.

Boudnib
https://www.facebook.com/francoisrekkam
Google Maps shows a handful of places in Boudnib, but Auberge Rekkam is the only place in town that is in function. Nice place. I stayed in a nice little hut, toilet and showers are in a different part of the complex. Good food is cooked for you if you want, plus a glass of Moroccan wwine. English is spoken. Nice, friendly owners.

Merzouga
Auberge Tifinagh, which is on the Southern end right at the foot of the big dunes. Clean and spacious rooms: 2 bedrooms, kitchen, big shower, living room for MAD100 per night, no food included. Bikes in front of the room, in a central area, entry doors close at night. Can't beat it for the price. Restaurants and cafes are within walking distance.

Khamlia
https://www.facebook.com/people/DAR-...0064240052571/
Hotel Dar Aytma Khamlia is a lovely little place run by a Berber family who are laid back and love & play Gnaoua music sometimes at night. Good food (Berber pizza!), nice & clean room. Good for a stay if you want something else then the Merzouga usual stuff. The main brother knows his pistes. For me this was the starting point for the amazing MS12 track.

Alnif
https://www.facebook.com/people/DAR-...0064240052571/
Hotel Palmiers is where I stayed in Alnif. There are other options at the other end of the main street, but it looked a bit shabby to me. Also, secure parking wasn't really obvious. Hotel Palmiers has got that grand old hotel feel over it, plenty of rooms. Food available. Secure parking in the back garden.

Amellagou
https://aubergeamellagou.com/
MAD300 half board, if I remember correctly. Auberge Amellagou is the only place to stay in that area, and it is a rather nice hotel. Very clean, very welcoming. I had a very relaxed hour watching the sunset over the almond trees, from the rooftop lying in one of the comfy sunbeds. Food was tasty, and the host was a source of knowledge. English is spoken. Bike was secure within the garden walls.
I stayed one night to do the MH13 Tagountsa tunnel loop track.
I would go there again.

Zaida
Hotel La Pomme is clean and has helpful staff who speak English. I stayed here on my way back North. It has a spacious parking area, but no secure parking. There were a dozen or so other bikers, so I wasn't bothered too much. Their bikes were far newer and cleaner then mine ;-)
Food is available next door, I had my breakfast there but it took some time. In town are a string of restaurants that do the usual thing, but it had a bustling feel to it at night. I liked it.

Moulay Idriss
https://kasabah.xtadia.com/
Hotel El Kasaba is in the old part of town, in an alley right at the end. To get there you have to go up the pavement and through the "Bab Elkasba" gate and turn right, it is at the far end.
Clean hotel, good room, every floor has a little sitting area. Food is plenty available in the center of town.

M’diq
Hotel Nord Kapp (MAD300, no breakfast) was my last stop before crossing the border at Cueta in the early morning. Bike was parked outside the 24/7 reception. Clean room, nothing special. On the top floor is a shisa lounge.
Bar downstairs was closed.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
