Vietnam motorcycle buying

Hi,
I will be arriving in Ho Chi Minh with a friend on 06.02.2020 by plane. We have 3 months to travel through Vietnam from south to north and back again. We are looking for 2 motorcycles up to 125 cc. A motorcycle bike can also have 150 cc. Do you have any experience with this or do you know someone on site who can help us purchase the well-preserved motorcycles?

Used versus "well preserved"

You will find several street sellers of used motorcycles in HCMC. US dollars work best. A Win is likely the most common in the "motorcycle" category versus step-through scooters. The days of Minsk are long gone, a few around, but well "used."

Three times I've rented and did one way HCMC -Hanoi and then called someone the rental agent knew and they collected the motorcycle and pitched them on a train or truck to go back the way I'd come: $50 for that service.

If you're mechanically inclined, Ok to go with something used, but "well preserved" is "Buyer Beware." For three months you'd be wiser to buy a new one 125, sell it for a loss when done, but will know it has not been flogged by a previous backpacker or?

Take your own gear - and tool kit.

I once rented a Honda step-through (import from Japan), next day rented a Handa, (yes it is spelled Handa versus Honda) from China. It was easy to see, feel, appreciate the difference.

The most interesting, and best running 125, was a "Frankenstein" Minsk. They were Minsk's that had been gutted, engine/tranny/electrics replaced with with Vietnam made Win parts.

I've been in Vietnam five times, used everything from 1970's Soviet leftover 650cc Urals to 110 cc step through models. The 125cc was fine for my weight (200 Lbs) and luggage and Win had parts and mechanics everywhere.

Regards,

Hi,

We have been in Vietnam last year and we rented our motorbike a Honda Wave 125cc from Style Motorbikes in Ho chi Minh. We delivered the motorbike after 1 month in Hanoi. They have also there a store so there is no need to ship back the motorbike in Ho chi Minh except you are planning to return back! They have very reliable motorbikes and we were very lucky to have one brand new. Enjoy Vietnam is an amazing country!

Cost

Updated with some links
What was the rental cost for one month ?

=> Example
* Honda XR150
https://stylemotorbikes.com/product/honda-xr-150cc/
https://offroadvietnam.com/motorcycl...0-rental-hanoi

* Honda Master 125
https://stylemotorbikes.com/product/honda-master-125cc/

* Suzuki GD 110 cc
https://stylemotorbikes.com/product/suzuki-gd-110cc/
$250 for one month. Pick up in HCMC and leave in Hanoi at no extra cost.

Nice tour that I will put on my dream list.
If they say that the drive time is around 2 weeks.
Than 1 month should be good. To have time to do some detours and not only drive stright.
And there is a simple process for a 30 days Visa.
(When Corona restirctiosn are lifted)

What is the price level for a new 125 cc in HCMC ?

99% of tourists who came to Vietnam and bought motorbikes made the same (wrong) decision. They were lied by the name “Honda Win” while in fact, it’s a Chinese copy of this bike. The sellers are liars. Vietnam has many better choices but costs much more (1,000 – 5,000$US range) than Chinese shitty bikes. In reality, many tourists complained about bikes they bought in Vietnam but it’s their fault because they didn’t want to spend from 1,000$US, most just wanted to buy 200-500$US so they don’t have real bikes.

Warning for Chinese copy of the Honda Win

Car ??

Car ???

that is not a 100-125 cc Motorcycle.

With motorcycle, you are part of the environment.
Not looking at it from a window.

Purchase and maintain bikes in Vietnam

Video from Ed March gives a good view.

Both of the street markets.
And the level of maintenece they do.
And also the quality of Chinese spare parts.

Agree that an XR150 rental is absolutely the way to go in Vietnam.
