Anybody doing Dili to Darwin soon?
Just got back to Dili after a fantastic couple of weeks bumming around East Timor. Now have to start cleaning the bike ready for Australian quarantine. I've been eyeing a ship leaving on 30th November, so long as anl actually responds. Anybody else heading this way fancy sharing a container?

Hello

I,m probably not that very soon , but for those heading the same way.
I,m looking at entering Darwin around 5th of Feb.
Currently in Thailand and very soon heading for Malaysia and Indonesia , looking for people riding same way who like to search for cold drinks.

How have the roads been in East Timor?
Have they been worked on at all?
Was there in 2012 and on a road bike , lucky to get around without knocking a hole in my engine ( BMW Boxer ).

Just some advices for those of you doing Dili to Darwin shipping.

Its difficult if not impossible to get some strong detergent suitable to wash a dirty bike who have been all over Indo in Dili. Bring this with you from Indo. A couple of cans of chain cleaner is good stuff. You can of course use gasolin too.

Straps - you will need decent straps to strap down your bike in the container. ANL/Toll does not provide those straps so you will need to provide those. These are expensive in Dili. I paid 20 USD pr piece for 4 straps, altogether 80 USD. Probably much cheaper in Indo if you can buy them there.

Great food in the Indian restaurant just near opposite from Dili Backpackers. Enjoy cheap and delicious food. It will be much much much more expensive in Australia....

For roads in East Timor, good and bad are relative terms. About half of the road from the border to Dili has been repaired very recently. As for the rest of the country it feels like very little work has been done in recent years. There is construction on the Dili Maubisse road that should be finished in the next few months.

We were two up on a transalp with ****ed suspension. The only road which was truly terrible was the road down to Jaco Island where we ended up horizontal 4 times. Apart from that the main roads around the country are all serviceable, some very bumpy sections especially around Viqueque, but nothing to lose sleep over.

My friend and I are in Thailand as well having come from England.
Aiming to head down to Malaysia and across to Indonesia in a few weeks. Then make our way to East Timor and across to Darwin around mid Feb potentially. Sounds like we may be a few weeks behind but hopefully we can meet up along the way or sort a container together possibly to Darwin.

Happy travels! Any info or experience you have with ferries to and across Indonesia would be great as well,

Sorry on small smartphone with fat fingers.
Think I will be a few weeks ahead of use.
Currently in KL waiting on Quotes from Aseantex .
Will keep you informed as said on similar thread there needs to be up to date information.
Shipping to Darwin looks a lot more expensive now than a couple of years ago.
When I crossed from the main border from Thailand I asked to look at the foreigner vehicle sign in book. Was about someone every second day crossing. A lot of Lurkers ( not signed onto hubb ) on the road who might want to share costs.
Guessing.

dili to darwin
so i'm on this rout as well, actually in myanmar, so it will tage me somme more days to reach dili.
those who have done this shipping allready, you had an apointement for the shipment in advance ore do you just walked in an agency when your in dili to ask for the next ferry?
thanks for helping.
for those who are still in se asia, i guess i'm in dili end of march, for splitted container costs and cleaning compinon ;-)

The company who does shipping Dili - Darwin is called ANL Logistics and the contact person is Lenor Castula. You can use this email adress:

Its best to contact well in advance as I belive ships are not regularly on this route and can postponed due to bad weather etc.

In my case they used long time to answer my mails and I sent 3-4 mails to them before they answered me. And in the end they kept on changing dates for the ships arrival/departure and it became a rather stressful experience for me.

Anyhow you should be there a few days before the ships departure as you have to clean tour bike thoroughly as a totally spotless bike is a demand from the australian authorities. And you have to clean by hand yourself as there isnt any place in Timor that can do it for you. Remember also to bring decent detergent from Indonesia as such a thing hardly can be found in Dili. Consider also to bring decent straps from Indo somewhere. I bought in Dili and had to pay 20 USD a piece and 4 pieces is needed.
