Hi Wayne
I rented a bike from Tony's Big Bikes in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Motorcycle Rental & Tours, Thailand | Tony's Big Bikes
To blat about the town and locality, I rented a 125cc step thru which easily took me and my (pillion) daughter everywhere. Then I rented a 400cc bike to explore beyond the city and into the mountains. Tony was great to deal with (a Cockney) and let me test-ride the bikes before handing over cash, which was < £10 per day.
My daughter and I then backpacked in Laos and Cambodia. It was really easy to get around by tuktuk or public bus.
In Cambodia, we hired 2 motorcycle taxi's who came picked us up and stayed with us all day. Angkor Wat is the must-see in Seam Reap & it is huge so you will need transportation to get the best out of your day there.
For us, having 2 taxi bikes turned out to be a great decision as I fell ill on day 2 so my driver returned me to the hotel whilst my daughter continued on her own. She (then aged 24) was well cared for by her driver. For 3 days taxi-ing us around it cost $50 US.
I found the Killing Fields near Phnom Penh very emotional.
I found Laos very relaxing. So much, I hardly visited any of the touristy stuff. In particular, Luang Prabang was a great place to completely chill-out. Great memories of French architecture, lovely coffee, big bottles of BeerLao and baguettes
