Best route to Pamir-Highway from Stuttgart/Germany

Hello all,

I've started to plan a trip for July 2027 with my motorcycle to the Pamir.
Now, I found some obstacles to do that:

- Boarders of Az are closed for vehicles
- Also for Iran
- And transit through Russia looks dangerous for Germans

Am I right with this assumptions?
Is there a alternative?

Thanks a lot from Stuttgart/Germany

Regards
Jürgen

I think you've summarised it pretty well. It's the same situation and problem for me, I've been waiting for a few years now for a route to open to allow me to go east from Europe. I refuse to enter Russia for moral/conscience reasons (the same with Afghanistan) and Iran wouldn't be an option for me either. I think I'm stuck until there are changes in the world.

Transit through Russia is absolutely fine. I did it last year as a Brit and I know of others who have. The Russians are lovely people, behave like a guest and you'll be treated as a guest. You'll need a double entry tourist visa, obtained in advance in your home country. NOT an evisa.

This is a German guy I met on the Pamir: https://www.instagram.com/bergfreund77/

No doubt transit through Russia is fine for some, but not for others. I'm purely talking about moral grounds and hold no judgement on those that do - each to their own and all that, it's just not something I would do because of the state's actions in Ukraine (and elsewhere in Europe). But yes, safety wise it's no worse than most other countries..

Hi Jurgen,

i'm toying with riding pamir and then on into China etc. My route i think will mean riding through Russia or fly the bike into one of the stans and ride from there.

Have you looked at transporting your bike? Assume I'll have to fly with it to avoid it being 'imported'

Regards

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
