Hi.

Do you have a theft insurance if you go to the Stans from EU ?.

And if you have, what have you paid for 2 months ?

I dont know a company ( in Germany and Austria ) which insures this in these countries.

maybe you can ask insurance companies in these countries, but if they pay when it comes to a m problem?

On the other side, I have been there a few times, and there I wouln not worry about theft.
At least not of the motorcycle.

Insurance

Hi,

I live in Kyrgyzstan and insurance is not required until now.
Most of the insurances refuse to insure vehicles in Uzbekistan or Tadjikstan. About the other Stan countries I don't know.

If you would enter through southern Kyrgyzstan into country I could connect you to the insurance at our co-working space.

I guess you have to solve this issue on the way for each country.

Generally two things are true about moto theft insurance:

1) It depends very heavily on the motorcycle itself. Usually only available for new or nearly-new motorcycles. Around here, KASKO-type comprehensive insurance (including theft, vandalism etc.) is available for cars up to 10 years old, and motorcycles even less. My motorcycle is from 2008, I bought it in 2018, and even then no insurance company would even give me a quote.

2) Nobody will want to sell you insurance for only 2 months, or at least if they do, it will be prohibitively expensive.

Think of how insurance works: you and everybody else constantly contributes small payments to a common risk pool, and that pays for the rare occasions when some contributor needs a large payment out of that pool. It's not possible to have cheap insurance with an expensive payout (the cost of a motorcycle in Denmark!) and a high likelyhood (theft of an expensive, easily portable item in a developing country) and a tiny user base (how many motorcyclists ride through the Stans, in absolute numbers?).

You can get short-term coverage for mandatory insurance because literally every vehicle on the road contributes to that pool - and even then, your contribution would be proportionally much bigger than everyone else's. E.g. my mandatory bike insurance is 60 euros for 8 months, but if I were to get it for 2 weeks, it would be something like 20 euros.

For what you are looking for, the cost of 2 months of insurance would be very close to the value of the bike.

There are 3 types of insurance you need to think about.

1. Medical insurance. Many options, do a search or ask for your specific circumstances. Any reputable health insurance scheme will cover the Stans.

2. Road (3rd party) insurance. You won't be able to get this before your trip. Buy it at the border (or you may find a broker in the major cities). Not a good idea to ride without it, and in most countries it's a legal requirement anyway.

3. Comprehensive or theft cover. I've never heard of an insurer who will cover you for this outside your home country. Carry chains/cables/locks.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It seems that I can't get this insurance.

My normal insurance, that include theft is for EU.

But on the green card I have : Russia - Iran - Turkey - Ukraine and 10 other countries.

So taking a chain and maybe a alarm is the way to do it.

I haven't read about theft of motorcycles on motorcycle forum's, so don't think it is a big problem, its just to be as safe as possible.

Ironically some of the worst theft problems are in big cities in Europe.
