Insurance for the EU leg of a RTW trip - help!

Apologies if this is a really silly question, but it is something I need to ask, as it looks like a minefield to me.

My partner and I are about to pack for a trip around the world on both of our BMW F650GS. We are from the UK and are having trouble getting UK motorbike insurance for long enough to cover the European leg of our trip. We expect to be in Europe for approx. 1 year, and nobody here wants to cover us for longer than 90 days, and when I ask if I can pay to upgrade to longer EU cover they say it is not possible

Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't mind getting separate insurance once I get out of the UK if that's what's needed.

Many thanks in advance for your help, from this very confused newbie!

Hi S,

As you have send us your inquiry, I will just pop by to reply, maybe it will be useful for someone else.

We can offer 90 days border insurance policy/green card insurance policy also known as third party liability insurance.

Max time span is 90 days, that you can extend if you need for either 15/30 or 90 days and then continue doing it until you're in Europe.

Rest of the info is on our website,

Enjoy your RTW,

Cheers

Can't you insure your bikes in the UK? The insurance is valid in all Eu and EEA countries. The 90 days most often referes to like for like cover. You will still be covered third party only outside of the 90 days.

That being said, UK companies can't seem to fathom that someone would use their vehicle in another country. Only three insurance companies will offer green cards (needed outside of EU) and they are all underwritten by Aviation.

Thanks very much to both of you for replying!

I took out insurance in the UK (as I needed it anyway to get out of the country at the very least!) and wasn't advised by the company itself, funnily enough, but by a friend of mine who used to work for a motorcycle insurance company that for the life of the policy they have to cover you for the minimum insurance requirement in all EU countries, which is an EU law apparently, so basically what you have said c-m.

So, are you saying that if you have an insurance in the UK it offers basic cover for the EU by default? Then what's the green card for? Apologies if I got it wrong.

I'm planning a London-India and I'm struggling with the insurance bit, I've been told that you can get the insurance at borders once you are of europe, but I'm not sure how that works.

Thanks,
