Buying an older bike (Ural preferably) in eastern Russia
Hey guys,

I have been unsuccesful so far in getting ANY information about how and where to buy a bike in Vladivostok (or other cities close to the eastern shore). I need to get to Europe, preferably on an older Ural. Would you have any tips? Thanks a lot!

That's probably because it would be very difficult--maybe impracticable--to buy a moto in Vladivostok.

Here are a couple links (in Russian) with bikes in Vladi. Of course, no guarantee any of them will be for sale when you arrive.

I'd forget about the Urals; my understanding is that most production is currently exported and the ones you see for sale are often from the 70s or 80s; I don't rate their chances of making it to europe as very high.

Not sure how you'll register the bike, you'd probably have to ride it on a power of attorney, which may or may not cause problems if you cross borders.

They are still about, I saw quite a few when I rode out to Siberia on my old R100GS in 2012. You shouldn't have much trouble finding one. Bare in mind that these bikes, especially the older ones require a lot of mechanical skill and experience to keep up and running.

I have a Russian biking friend who lives not too far from Irbit, where they are made. I could try contacting him to see what he knows; bikes for sale etc.

For Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan no visa needed (depending on passport) so i would say best bet is in Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan

I would say best option is to buy a bike in Kazakhstan preferably Almaty

Problem with buying old soviet bikes is most don't come with papers so make sure before hand they have them.

I put a German guy on this forum in touch with a local in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) who sorted him out with a Ural and side cart for $800 along with papers

For both Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan you will need power of attorney papers which can be carried out in one day if you know the right guy, i am sure most local bikers will help you out on this

Thanks for the comments, guys! I just arrived to Vladivostok, foreign bikes seem to be more expensive here than elsewhere, so maybe I eventually try one of these older Russian machines. Hope to make it home before winter

Hi Matej,
Riding old or new Ural whatever from Vladivostok to Moscow or further would be a heroic act. Old Urals are pain in the ass to ride for long distances.
You'd better opt some Japanese or European bike.
Problem is that you can't register and ride it legally without Russian leave to remain and permanent address registration.

But you can temporarily import the bike you legally bought abroad (I.e. not in Russia) for 6 months.
