Any up to date info ? - Train from Magadan/Vladivostok to Moscow.

I'm playing with the idea of extending my 2016 trip. Instead of finishing in Mongolia, I might continue to either Magadan or Vladivostok.

For me to do this I need an affordable and not to tiresome method to get me and the bike back to the west.

I've heard many tales of putting your bike on the train on the hubb but nothing recently and the search isn't helping in this instance.

Any real experiences and contact details for people who can sort this in Russia would be appreciated.

Cheers, Ted

Hi Ted,
there is the possibility to go by train along the BAM, maybe starting in Aldan or Neryungri and heading to Moscow.
This year we took the train from Tynda to Moscow, at least in Tynda it is possible to load the bikes on the train.

Hej Ted,

from Magadan you will have the following options:

If you want to fly home - ship the bike by sea (Container/deck freight) to Vladivostok and from there to Europe. You will need the help of an agent,
Yuri from Links Ltd. is the man (just search the HUBB about him). He will clear customs for the bike.

If you want to pick the bike again in Russia - also shipping first to Vladivostok and then by train to Moscow (..or wherever you want to have it). Fly to Vladi and do it yourself or ask Yuri to do it.

Or use a truck from Magadan and take it on a train later, Tynda will be the first bigger town for this. You will need to show up in Tynda to fix the train. Going with the truck might be difficult as they go often with two drivers.

So if Magadan will be the end of your trip anyway and it is just to go
home, I would vote for flying back to the UK.

Here is what I paid in 2014:

3 flights Magadan-Moscow-Berlin-Gothenburg: approx. 600 Euro
Container Magadan-Vladivostok: approx. 500 Euro
(we had 4 bikes in - so 125 Euro per bike)
Container Vladivostock - Hamburg: 1.800 US $
(total of 14 bikes in it, russian customs cleared stored and loaded by Yuri)
German Customs: approx. 160 Euro

These rates are from 2014 and will be different for next year for sure.
It might also be too early to ask the forwarding agents for next years rates, the world just moves to quick these days.

Hope this helps.

I will go again next year and look for people to team up at the Baikal,
within July would work fo me. Plan is 110, BAM and OSR on 640ADV.
Best regards

Uwe

Hi, i have a plan to ride to Magadan this year, i have few questions.
Did you fly to Vladivostok to sort things out with shipping bike to Europe, or Yuri did everything?
Is price 1600$ for one bike or for container?

Im planning to go in the beggining of june.
thanks for reply.

You don´t need to fly to Vladi, Yuri has an agent in Magadan who can fix
papers with you.

But you will need to pay Yuri for unloading your bike from Magadan container, transport to his storage and loading into Europe container.

I payed 1.800 US $ for one bike - in 2014

Sounds like they're both an expensive dead end.

I think I'll just sell my bike in Mongolia, fly home, drink a cold one and buy another bike with the money I saved

BAM and RoB in July 2016

Hi there,
I also plan to go back to Far East Russia this summer to ride the BAM and RoB to Magadan.

The way I see it there are 2 big options:

1. Ship the bike there and ride back.
I tried option no.1 in 2012 on my own solo trip which took me from Romania to Mongolia via Caucus and Central Asia and to Vladivostok and then by boat/plane north to Magadan where my trip back would start. The trip back was Magadan – Yakutsk –Mirny – Moscow (Mirny – Moscow by plane) –then south to Georgia Turkey and back home to Romania. The whole trip took 6 months and amounted to 36.000 km.
I tried to ride the OSM, and on Sunday, 5th August 2012 around 15.00, I managed to fry my clutch 110 km going from Susuman to Tomtor. Distance left to Tomtor aprox 150 km. Had to activate the Spot device. Rescue arrive aprox 30 hours later, Monday 6th August 2012 around 21.00. Fix the clutch and continued along the Federal Highway to Yakutsk, waters being too high, after 48h of rain for the OSM.

2. Ride there and ship the bike back.
This year I have 30 days holiday in July and want to ride the Bam and RoB via OSM. Plan to ride as fast as possible from Romania to Lake Baikal (7 days) and then head on the BAM and RoB to Magadan. Considering also the Tuva track but I think is too much for 30 days.
This one will be tight.
My bike is a V-Twin, 600 cc, 1993, Honda Transalp.
From Magadan I want to ship the bike to Vladivostok and from there by Yuri from Links to Europe. I worked with him before and was good. He also has good references from other travelers. I would like to split the container and the costs with other riders who will want to ship back from Vladi.
I will fly direct home from Magadan.
I’m looking for anyone planning a similar trip, and want to share information and ride together at least parts of the road and/or organize the shipping of the bikes back.

If anyone is interested please let me know your thoughts about it.

Sounds a bit like the Dave Wright ethos for both bikes and women Ted !!!!

Possible to do a deal with someone to ride it back from Vlad to the UK?

Might involve a bit of storage if the season is wrong but doable?

I don't know why people don't bike swap, I'll ride your bike back from Vlad and you ride mine back from India kind of thing.....only be a V5 name change wouldn't it?

Dreaming.......
