And let's not forget to check the opposite end of the power cable, where it connects to the motorcycle electrical system. It is very possible that the connection made years ago when the mounting bracket was first installed has become loose, disconnected, or intermittent, or that the fuse supplying this power connection (and/or the inline fuse in the Garmin wiring harness) has blown.
I encountered the above problem once after my dealer had carried out major service on my moto - they had bumped the wiring connection and this pulled the cable powering the GPS out of the wiring harness. Because that wire was not a OEM connection, the dealer technician did not know how to put it back together again.
