zumo 660 charging problems?
Hi folks, i did a search before posting but nothing relevant came up. So here goes, has any one who has a zumo 660 experienced charging problems from the cradle? My zumo will charge from the wall socket but not from either the bike or car cradle. I find it hard to believe that both cradles have broken simultaneously. I have had the unit for two years so it is out of manufacturers warranty. If you have had problems how did you fix them or what did it cost to have them fixed and where from? I have done the checking fuses and polishing contacts etc. I am loathe to buy a new one as they are not (on my budget at least) cheap.
Thanx in advance for any help. GM |
I would try emailing Garmin support in the UK. Other people I know have said they are usually fairly helpful. The only charging problems I've had with mine has been a broken connection in the bike wiring which doesn't seem to be the case with yours if the car cradle doesn't work either.

Zumo 660 charging problems
If your Zumo charges from the wall socket or PC then that proves the battery connections and the battery itself are OK(This uses the mini USB connector).
Most problems will be either with:- 1. All electrical cables and connectors it best to remake all the connections and test for continuity good earthing and power supply +ve to +ve and -ve to -ve. 2. Check for 12 volt supply this may sound strange but a bad connetion will lower the voltage and your Zumo will never charge. Check for a good earthing, Check your fuses. 3, Check your wiring loom for cuts and twisting. 4: Clean all the multi-pin connections on the back of the Zumo and the cradle pins and that there is no damage to connections or pins. 5. Find someone who has a similar cradle and see it will charge if it does then the cradle or pins are at fault. try going into Touratech they are very helpful and can test it in one of their bikes cradles 6: Open up the cradle and check the internal connections for broken or dry soldered joints. 7.Its a process of ilimination go step by step inch by inch. 8:When the Zumo is in the cradle try pushing the zumo down into the cradle to push the connectors closer together. 9. When you close the back door on the Zumo after charging on the wall socket is it closing fully it must be a tight seal as it opperates an internal switch inside.. There should be a plastic hook on the back door which engages inside the zumo onto a switch is it broken? Thats all I can think off, good luck. |
I have a ZUMO 350 what does not charge in cradle. But charge with USB power
The fault is not in the cradle or power to cradle! This is what I found on another forum "Did you charge it with a non-Garmin wall charger? This will cause it to go into mass storage mode and it won't come out until a PC comes to negotiate with it." This could be the case because the fault came up after I had connected the ZUMO to my PC. So ZUMO might think it is in mass storage mode The fix was to do a factory reset, what does not delete your POIs or maps. And it started charging again in the cradle I hope this was the case and someone can save some money from replacing the cradle or cables. |

Was working after fix for one day, and now the problem is back So it has to be the cradle Its going to cost me some money :9898: |
I have Montana, which has similar problems with the cradle.
Check the connectors in the cradle and from your gps, they might be dirty or corroded. If your cradle has (push pins, which go in and out), it might be that one of them is not moving properly, some WD-40 might help. |
And let's not forget to check the opposite end of the power cable, where it connects to the motorcycle electrical system. It is very possible that the connection made years ago when the mounting bracket was first installed has become loose, disconnected, or intermittent, or that the fuse supplying this power connection (and/or the inline fuse in the Garmin wiring harness) has blown.
I encountered the above problem once after my dealer had carried out major service on my moto - they had bumped the wiring connection and this pulled the cable powering the GPS out of the wiring harness. Because that wire was not a OEM connection, the dealer technician did not know how to put it back together again. Michael |
I have a similar problem which appears to be an with the battery in my bike. I rigged up a circuit for my zumo 660 with a couple of alligator clips and hooked it up to my car battery and it works fine. I hooked it up to my bike battery and....nothing. The battery on the bike seems fine and starts the bike no problems. Any ideas?

I used to get similar issues with a car-type-Nuvi when I plugged it into a KTM 990; I concluded that the Garmin thinks it is linked to the computer brain of the bikes' ECU and goes into data mode. Blame CANbus also? |
