Tyres...????
Off to Morocco at weekend two up on 1200 gsa....hoping to do Marrakech, Dades etc and down to Zagora.....any views on whether my tourance next will be ok or should i put TCK70's on ......?? Would like to do Erg Chebbi if poss....

Yeah, I will be on a similar trip and I want to have a little pop out into the dunes at Erg Chebbi, just to have a go and I'm still of the opinion that i might not be able to do it, despite a lot of off road experience in the UK.

That is on a lightish 650 single that I don't mind crashing with 50/50 tyres on it. At worst I will go for a ride around the Erg and hitch up on a camel later.

Camels are cool!

Hmmm......well ..i guess thats a no go.. Having travelled all over Europe and Arctic circle two up with no probs i have never done Morocco and simply wondered what the best advice is on tyres.
Do i take it Zagora is not a prob..???

Oh eye, it is all paved down there. I'm sure you'd be fine on most of the gentler pistes too, just make sure they don't turn nasty later on! Chris Scotts book is an invaluable one for gauging how hard the pistes will be. I'll let you know how many metres I get into Erg Chebbi!

I am no expert on Morocco, but I think you should go for it on the GS1200 and find out for yourself how it is going to be like.

The GS1200 will take you anywhere you want to go in Morocco. Through the Atlas mountains, over to the Dades Gorge, over the Jebel Sahro massif, across the Rekkam plateau, along hundreds of miles of desert pistes. But it won't do soft sand.

I rode all over Morocco in 1990 on a 1989 Yamaha fz750 with normal street tyres on, including a bit of off roading.. Stopped at dunes tho lol

A GS will go anywhere

I know the feeling of trying to wittle down the clothes.

The best option is the "go really light and then pick up local ethnic, cheap original wear along the way". That is a killer in my opinion (although I never travel with anyone else because they will annoy me). Once the box is full, then it is full! And you do a bit for the people who you visit whilst appearing to be Mr Travel Supremo. Hopefully!!!

I was at Erg Chebbi yesterday, struggled to walk up the dunes never mind ride a moto! We're 2 up on a loaded Super Tenere 1200 and as Peter said, your GS will take you anywhere apart from soft sand. I switched the Tourance tyres fitted to my bike for a set of Avon Distanzias and so far they have worked 100% on motorways, river crossings, mud, gravel and a few fairly easy pistes.

Definitely pack light, we've brought too much (again!), you can wash your kecks at night, hang 'em out and they'll be dry in the morning!

A GS ADV will get you to Erg Cheggi but not up it. There must be plenty of videos on you tube of Enduro bikes going up it so take a look and decide for yourself!
I've seen Ducati's and Harleys in Southern Morocco and generally the roads are quite good so no problem whatever tyres you choose. If you want to get the most out of your time there fit TKC 80's as they'll offer more grip on tracks than the TKC70 or Tourances. Have fun!
