Slovenia Stays
Hi,
We are Joe and Henrietta and have been travelling UK and Europe from Australia, now for 3 mths on our overloaded Bonneville. Making our way down to Malta to spend the winter there from mid November(if this sounds familiar it's because have posted before for different bits of advice) Anyway been through central Europe and presently in Salzburg for a few days and plan to go into Slovenia next. We have been camping and airbnb and would like some advice on where to go in Slovenia, our plan is to get a self contained unit for a week to get a bit of a break. Would like somewhere a bit out of the way quiet and nice scenery (not too touristy), hopefully also a bit more credit card friendly.

Soca Valley, Mount Mangart, the short stretch of the beach.

Also there is a very nice small hotel in the middle of the woods in small mountains where you can eat steak from the bears ( one of the few places where this is legal ) and the owner is a really good cook

Triglav National Park is right on the northwestern border, and quite beautiful.

Thanks for all the replies, making list to research them, especially about weather in the mountainous regions. Bear steak sounds interesting, but worked many years as a zoo keeper and looked after the bears for a good part of that time, so not sure I would be keen to eat one! Looking at a B&B in Cerkno,as well as camping in Trigav National Park.

The guy in the hotel loves bears and has a lot of respect, but in this area here are so many of them that they have to do something about.

And he still treats this with respect.

Thanks again for replies, leaving Salzburg tomorrow, and have booked airbnb in Cerkno for a week, seems central but quiet, and only a bit over an hour to Lubijana can do day trips around to get feel of Slovenia, before heading for Trieste and Italy.

Shed the luggage for a while if you can and enjoy some Alpinestrasse (scenic toll roads) in Austria e.g. Grossglockner (bit of a detour), Nochalmstrasse (on your way). Stunning scenery and riding.
There are great riding roads in Austria. Heading south even the "local access" 99 (B99?) is fun. Better still if you have the option to choose more remotes road. It's still possible to make good progress. The tunnel on the A10 is tolled.
My other tips for Austria:
- Never order the soup.
- Big Louis.de motorbike shop in Villach if you need any re-supply.

There's a great little WW1 museum in the Soca valley in Kobarid. If that's your bag.

Hi, We are in Slovenia now and staying in a small village about 10Km from Cerkno, have been avoiding larger roads as much as possible, and came into Slovenia from Loibl pass and followed along some really great minor roads through gorges and very pretty hill country. Were intending to cross via Grossglockner but snow was predicted on the day we wanted to cross, after some of the passes in Switzerland decided maybe not. What we rode of Austria coming from a rather flat Australia, if one stays off the main freeways any other road is great. Next point is we are heading for Italy next via Soca Valley(WW1 is an interest we spent a good bit of time in Belgium around Ypres) and our first stop will be Venice. Can you take a bike onto the island itself? and can you camp there or some cheapish places to stay any ideas.

No, you cant go intoVenice with a bike.
But there are public parking houses just when you come over the bridge and then straight, you will see them after 200m on the right side.

I would not park them outside somewhere, Venice is hot about stealing.

And it is expensive.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
