Non Resident/Tourist Owning a Motorcycle in Italy

Hi is it possible to own a motorcycle (new or used) in Italy, being a non resident (foreigner). And come twice a year to ride, that's of course subject to visa. What are the requirements? I have read somewhere of instances of tourists owning motorcycles in Italy.

Hi, Nope....to the best of my knowledge the only way a non-resident can buy a new vehicle here is on export plates, which as the name suggests....implies that the vehicle will be exported after a short time ( I think it's a matter of months, possibly up to a year), it's just a way to save on paying local VAT since they assume that the tax will be paid wherever the buyer eventually registers the vehicle permanently.

Otherwise having a vehicle in your name requires a tax registration number as well as a residence permit ( or application for one) , for non-EU citizens, or proof of residence if otherwise....

However.... A quick search will take you to a very trustworthy Irish outfit that can help you buy insure register and keep a motorcycle of your choice within the EU for as long as you want.......

It can also be alleged that when riding a non-Italian plated bike, paying motorway tolls is optional

Nah... Actually it's just a concession they make out of respect for anyone brave enough to ride the entire breadth of the country on an aprilia

I also hear that if the vehicle is registered outside of Italy it can be kept and ridden in Italy without any problems. Is this true?

In theory no....but only in theory . Just like every other EU country there's a time limit after which a bike has to be registered locally...can't remember if it's six months or a year.

This really boils down to how law-abiding and\or paranoid you are ....since nobody can possibly know when your bike first entered the country and in actual fact nobody really cares much .

As long as it's properly insured you're unlikely to ever have any problems .
