Motorcycle insurance

Hi guys thinking about spending a year touring the EU via MC but current insurance will only allow you 90 days cover per year. Any one know of any companies that will cover you for longer?
Thanks Martin

Depending on where you are from, the Schengen agreement will limit you to 90 days out of every 180 days in the Schengen countries.

I would wait till after 29th March to make any plans - the 90 day rule may well apply to UK passport holders after Brexit as we could be subject third country nationals status rules, and need a visa. Not an impossible situation, and it may also be a lot more complicated for us using UK registered vehicles in the EU than it is now.

I am from the UK and yes I will wait til Brexit has been finalised before I make any concrete plans. But I would still like to know if there is any way of obtaining insurance for longer than 90 days. As far as i know it is not possible now or post brexit regardless of the outcome but if there is anyone that knows different i would be greatfull if they would be so kind as to let me know.

Martin - you have had 365 days very basic insurance cover in the EU on your UK issued motor insurance policy for a number of years. Any policy written and issued in the EU must cover the user for the minimum cover in any other EU country. The 90 days you mention is the duration of the same level of cover you have in the UK ie fully comprehensive / TPF&T.

This link may help explain the “current” situation but as I said it could all change on 29th March

Yes, try getting an insurance company to explicitly tell you this though. I left one company because they refused to acknowledge that I could ride my bike anywhere in the EU and they are obligated to cover me third party, which was all I was covered for in the UK anyway. They wanted me to tell them when I intended to travel and for how long, otherwise, according to them, I had no cover. Infuriating.

Thanks that is very interesting.
I have a cunning plan. I am not sure if it will work but it could possibly give me 6 months full cover. The plan is to time my insurance so it runs out 3 months in to the trip so when i renew my policy the 3 months should hopefully start again. Unless they have a clause to prevent this?

MCE cover is automatically for 183 days in EU. Don't know how good the cover is cos I've never had to claim for an EU incident, but they sorted out my UK claim a couple of years ago when a dopey pensioner knocked me off in a car park. They were pretty shambolic and it took a year, but they did get the other side to pony up eventually.

I have heard MCE rose the premiums this year to many people, especially tour operators? Forcing them to go third party, as the comprehensive was just too expensive.
