Motorcycle insurance

Hi guys thinking about spending a year touring the EU via MC but current insurance will only allow you 90 days cover per year. Any one know of any companies that will cover you for longer?
Thanks Martin

Depending on where you are from, the Schengen agreement will limit you to 90 days out of every 180 days in the Schengen countries.

I would wait till after 29th March to make any plans - the 90 day rule may well apply to UK passport holders after Brexit as we could be subject third country nationals status rules, and need a visa. Not an impossible situation, and it may also be a lot more complicated for us using UK registered vehicles in the EU than it is now.

I am from the UK and yes I will wait til Brexit has been finalised before I make any concrete plans. But I would still like to know if there is any way of obtaining insurance for longer than 90 days. As far as i know it is not possible now or post brexit regardless of the outcome but if there is anyone that knows different i would be greatfull if they would be so kind as to let me know.
regards MArtin

Martin - you have had 365 days very basic insurance cover in the EU on your UK issued motor insurance policy for a number of years. Any policy written and issued in the EU must cover the user for the minimum cover in any other EU country. The 90 days you mention is the duration of the same level of cover you have in the UK ie fully comprehensive / TPF&T.

This link may help explain the “current” situation but as I said it could all change on 29th March

Yes, try getting an insurance company to explicitly tell you this though. I left one company because they refused to acknowledge that I could ride my bike anywhere in the EU and they are obligated to cover me third party, which was all I was covered for in the UK anyway. They wanted me to tell them when I intended to travel and for how long, otherwise, according to them, I had no cover. Infuriating.

Thanks that is very interesting.
I have a cunning plan. I am not sure if it will work but it could possibly give me 6 months full cover. The plan is to time my insurance so it runs out 3 months in to the trip so when i renew my policy the 3 months should hopefully start again. Unless they have a clause to prevent this?

Graham72 22 Feb 2019 16:58

Yes a Cunning foxy plan indeed, but read the policy wordings carefully and you may have to shop around - my current UK policy states up to 90 days in the year full cover as in the UK (comprehensive), but no single trip can exceed 30 days. Also states the minimum required by EU law in whichever country you are in, or travelling through for the whole period of policy.

I suppose you could put them all back to back or even have one day between each period of 30 days, but in the event of any claim I am sure they will try and find away out as always.

Potentially Brexit as it stands with “No Deal”, will make it all irrelevant. After 90 days in the EU you may have to either leave or get a resident permit/visa.
My Australian mate fell foul of the rules a few years back by going to Switzerland for a couple of weeks and returned to France, thinking he would reset the clock - no way he was told in no uncertain terms
Be interesting to see how the EU propose to enforce it though now there are no boarder checkpoints anymore.

They really are a bunch of killjoys. What do people who go around the world do for insurance do they have to get separate policies for each country they pass through?

Outside the EU probably - I think you purchase it at the borders for the duration of your expected stay in that country.

On my French insurance there are some adjoining non EU countries that they will cover for an additional premium, never enquired as to how much it would cost though.

Well yes, this is the norm in most areas of the world. Sounds like EU members get spoiled.

In North America, any single insurance policy is good throughout Canada and the US, but not in Mexico, the Caribbean, or anyplace in Central America. In South America there are 12 countries but just one area in which a single policy can cover multiple countries (Mercosur). In West Africa there is another multiple country insurance plan (Ecowas). I'm sure there are other exceptions I'm not remembering.

But the norm is that you purchase insurance at every border or take your chances....just like it used to be in parts of Europe which are now included in your Green Card.

That's because Switzerland is to all intents and purposes a member of the EU, with multiple agreements amounting to transparent borders.

Yes, they do. One of the benefits of the EU is getting away from a lot of the expense and red tape. Or used to be.

MCE cover is automatically for 183 days in EU. Don't know how good the cover is cos I've never had to claim for an EU incident, but they sorted out my UK claim a couple of years ago when a dopey pensioner knocked me off in a car park. They were pretty shambolic and it took a year, but they did get the other side to pony up eventually.
