Well I have finally bought a new tent.....not the one I was looking at to begin with. I purchased a Regatta Kivu 2.
Yes, it's a bit bigger than I really need but I like the size. It's also a bit heavier than I need (c.4kg) but that doesn't bother me. My old tent was just as heavy and never once caused me any concerns. It will sit across the pillion seat below the top box so the weight will be evenly distributed. I would never forego comfort and/or size just to get something that weighs a bit less. Doesn't really make sense to me when the alternative is no big deal anyway.
Some will say they have owned this tent and it was rubbish, others will say they have one and it's great. There will always be a difference of opinion about any piece of equipment but this will do nicely for me.
For the record, it is a dome tent (I can't handle those tunnel tents....again, just a personal preference); it has a hydrostatic head of 3000mm even though I don't plan going camping in the rain; it is waterproofed; it is fire retardent; it has a decent sized porch with a bathtub floor; and it's an adequate size for 2 people so with just me in it I won't have any issues with size. It has an erected footprint of 300cm x 160cm x 120cm and a packed size of 60cm x 19cm.
The only thing I'll get extra will be the pegs. A lot of tents come with rubbish pegs.
And the bonus was the price: normal retail is £100 but as we are out of season for many campers I got it for £50.
