Heidenau K60 in two up R1150GS

Hello,

Leaving for Morocco in two weeks on my R1150GS, we will be two up plus luggage, I´m guessing around 210/230kg on top of an already heavy R1150GS.

I don´t wish to go on extreme off road, but will not turn back on dry hard pistes. I´m thinking the Heidenau K60 will give me a lot more off road safety than my Tourances, as well as being more resistant to punctures. But will they cope well with so much weight?

What pressures would be advised?

They will cope very well, probably even better than the Metzelers.

But be prepared for a noisier ride; the front will howl at you all day long.

Hi Pedro,

IMHO K60 Scouts will do it easily. A couple from Malaysia, Alex and Alison Wong are doing the same in Mexico with an R1200GSA, two up with a big load and he is getting up to 20,000 kilometres from his K60's. They are a heavy tough tyre, resistant to punctures and wear well even with weight.

You want to have the pressures fairly high. When mine were fitted recently they put 32psi in the front and 38psi in the rear, cold. I think Alex runs a little higher because he is carrying an extra 80 or so kgs than me. I know he is over 150,000kms on the bike and he also swears by the K60's.

I've been on some gnarly, loose roads recently and didn't adjust the pressure and they performed great. These tyres are my first choice for my RTW trip but as pointed out by Keith1954, they will whine at you from the front, particularly between 100-110km/h.

So, considering the load, would you say 35/36 in the front and 42/43 in the rear?

Tyres K60

Hi had these on my GSA for a year,varied riding which included a fully loaded two up trip to France this year,ran them at 36/41 worked just fine for me

We're running the exact same tires on our Tiger Explorer. I didn't care for the Tourance EXP's that came stock on my bike and swapped for the K60's when they were done. We are 2up and loaded. Running 36/42. The K60's are indeed loud, much more than the EXP's. They're also day and night better in the dirt over the Tourance.

I will keep buying the K-60, love them. Keep the pressure high, it will help the rear from getting cracks in the casing. That being said I have run 2 rear tires low and they developed small cracks in the tread pattern. They cause no problem and I have continued using the tires loaded up to 100 mph entail the tread was gone. We where on our way 2up to Phenix Arizona, the temp was 117F and we where doing about 75-80 mph. We could not take the heat any longer and stopped to drink water and get our selves wet in the shade. When we stopped I noticed the bike felt funny, I looked and sure enough the rear tire was flat with a nail in it. It was so hot I could not touch it, I put a plug in the tire and aired it back up and it is the tire I still have on the back of my R1100gs. Great milage also/hard to change.

Just to thank people for the tips, I did buy the K60s and found them perfect.

I still have them on the bike and find them more than adequate on tarmac. Granted, I wouldn´t buy them if all I did was ride on european roads since they aren´t a patch on road dedicated tires if you ride fast, and they´re also not as confortable on smooth tarmac. However, I will buy them again on the next trip simply because they are tough, handle the kms very well, are good enough to be safe on tarmac, and are very good on dirt and rocks.
