Maybe?

Hola Martin,

Puedo hablar un poco de espanol pero es mas facil q usar ingles cuando estamos hablando sobre dinero!

Anyway, I'm a kiwi, i've ridden from Canada to Argentina pre-covid, and run my own moto-tour company for 10yrs in India/Pakistan/Nepal. I am looking at starting up some short 3wk tours in Northern Chile (Atacama) to Bolivia to South Peru (Cuzco ugh!) for clients here. This year I have an event in Rapa Nui so I thought I would try to check out a little and bring one or two people over. I only have one other right now for April, but rental bikes are way more than we can afford. Buyback could work though, depending on cost.

My options are 2 Chinese 250s (Zongshen) which i know are crap but we only need for 16days riding and they're pretty cheap. I prefer Honda 300 XRE or CRF, but not easy to find on rent or buyback. Your bikes are pretty good and big, so I may not have enough cash to buyback. The point is to spend a lot less to 'use' them for a very short period this time.

Let me know if you have ideas, but all good if not possible with you. Gracias!

Regarding buying a bike and leave Chile
If I am correct
a) You need to have to be the owner of the bike. A process that takes around one month, correct ?
b) From the law : "If the driver of the vehicle is the owner and has a foreign nationality, he must present a simple sworn declaration before a Notary, in which he undertakes to return the vehicle to the country within the authorized period. "

Is it difficult to get such a document?
"within authorized period". What are the rules there. How long can such a period be ?

This is important information if you want to buy a bike in Chile and tour SA

Thanks
Erik

I think that you are very optimistic about South American administration.
If you think that you can buy a bike, use it for 2-3 weeks. And then sell it.

My personal view is that is not an option for less than 3 months.
Particular if you want to ride outside Chile.

Thanks for reaching out!

Hi Jef, Hi Erik,

Thanks a lot for posting your questions in this thread!

I share Erik's opinion that buying a motorcycle for trips shorter than 2-3 months is not recommendable. The most important reason is that getting your RUT and registering a used bike in your name typically takes 3 days, time that you would much rather spend riding.

About leaving Chile:
A) It is preferable to wait for your final ownership document "padrón" to be issued before attempting a border crossing. This usually takes 3-4 weeks for a new bike and 6-8 weeks for a used one. In the case of a used motorcycle, you can alternatively present an authorization "poder" from the former owner. Unfortunately, this document is not accepted at all borders or by every customs official, which is why it is not recommended to rely on it and construct an itinerary around it.
B) The sworn declaration that needs to be presented at the border states that you'll bring back the bike of your property within the given time frame, which is typically 180 days and can be extended to 360 upon request. Obtaining this document is quite easy and convenient since it only takes a quick visit to a notary.

@Jef: I understand that you need the bikes to scout a tour that you will repeat later on with clients. Maybe it would be feasible to buy something, store it after your trip, and come back for it later. With enough anticipation, remote purchases are possible as well. It might be out of your budget, but I will have two XRE 300s coming back from Patagonia at the end of April. Unfortunately, I can't offer rentals at the moment.

I tried to answer as compactly as possible. If you guys have more questions, don't hesitate to ask through PM, check out my website, or publish another posting.

Ride safe!
Martin

Buying a new motorcycle with Andes Adventure Bikes

I am from Romania and went to South America to travel by motorcycle. I was able to buy and eventually sell a new motorcycle in Chile with Martin's (Andes Adventure Bikes) support.

With Martin's help, I experienced a very smooth and transparent purchasing process for my new motorcycle, as well as for the selling process. The entire process of buying a new motorcycle took 4 days, but because it was a new motorcycle, I had to wait for a document – Padron (official ownership document for the vehicle) from Registro Civil, in order to be allowed to cross the border outside Chile with the bike.

This document can be downloaded online and/or printed (even requested by Registro Civil in every bigger town) and it takes approximately 4 weeks to be available.

1. Without the Padron, it is not possible for the vehicle to cross the border (exit Chile) if the vehicle is new.
2. The Padron takes approximately 4 weeks to be available online for all transfers of ownership.
3. Some friends were able to cross the border after buying used bikes without a Padron but with a kind of “power of attorney confirmation” from the previous owner.

After I had the Padron in my possession, it was never a problem to exit Chile with the bike, or cross any other border. I went from Chile to Argentina, Argentina to Bolivia, Bolivia to Peru, and Peru back to Chile.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
