Hey mate,
There are heaps of rental places and they will only cost you a major organ per day...
As for buy back, there is no dealer that i know of in AUS that will contract to do this. Gentleman's agreement at best, even when the market was good here the risk was too high, but now that most shops dont want used bikes at all cus the market is so depressed. However there are plenty of people that do the buy and sell thing, plus this also mean that you dont have to do a round trip. That is the other problem.. sell a bike reg'd in one state is a PITA to sell in an other (impossible for a dealer). So if you are willing to take a hit it is pretty easy to do.
Check out Gumtree, facebook marketplace, and biketrader for used bike options.

Gum tree
Gum tree’s defo’ the best bet, Failing that try bikesales.com.au ...
You should be okay to buy and sell if you’re starting and finishing in the same place. But as suggested, be prepared to take a hit.
Me n’ wife are doing this with a car, as we don’t know how long we’ll be here in the country for. But whatever we lose, it’s still cheaper than a couple of months ‘ cheap’ car-rental costs.
Expect to pay at least 30% more than you’d expect in say the UK. But the same applies when you come to sell, again.
Good luck ...

Route?
BTW have you researched your route? And are you intending to stick to sealed roads?
Bris’ to Darwin’s around 3500 Kim’s. It can be done in a few days, without too much hard riding. But better to take at least a week. So 3 weeks ther n’ back is quite do’able.
Would recommend a detour thro’ Kakadu National park, during the OW or return. If you’re camping expect to pay anything from 15 bucks/night (cheap) to 50 or 60, depending. In my experience a few places only charge the ‘extra person’ fee, as motorcycle and (small) tent take up hardly any space. But be prepared to pay what everybody else is paying. Irrespective of them having a bloody great big 4wd and double-axle van and who expect a full length concrete slab, so they can dive-on, drive-off ...
There is scope for wild/free camping, but be prepared to ride some way from the road.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
