21 year old_Work &Holiday in Australia
Dear bikers

the daughter of a friend of mine (21 years old) wants to spend a year in Australia (Melbourne) using the visa Work & Holiday.

I'm helping she for papers and job search.
She's gradueted in Psychology but has a long experience as waitress, barmaid, baby sitter.
In the last 8 years she has worked part time in an important shop of wine ,gifts, chocolate and confetionary : Enoteca Italiana Zanoli (just italian version)
She wants to arrive in Melbourne.

Do you have any tips for looking for a job ?
A room ?
Any tips about how prepare a curriculum vitae ?
She's planning to fly to Melbourne around 11 January 2017

https://jobsearch.gov.au/#jobseekers-container is the government web site with jobs, harvest trail jobs and lots of advice and information

January is school holidays, summer holidays so in Melbourne and Sydney, although there might be more casual jobs available, there would also be a large number of school leavers and university students looking for casual work.
Harvest work is a possibility but there are dodgy agents and farmers who will rip workers off so need to be aware. Minimum wage for full-time worker is about AU$17 per hour, but for casual work it is more than $20 per hour plus penalty rates for weekend and evening work.
www.fairwork.gov.au is a government site which will assit ripped off workers get their proper wages, but of course worker needs to have good records and make a complaint.

There is no point in applying for work before you get here.

Does she have experience, like a placement, from the psych degree? She could probably find a better paying and more secure job in that sector if she has some experience. Here are a couple more job sites:

There are also probably some specialist social work / psychology recruitment agencies. I'm in Sydney so I don't know about Melbourne but the agencies here are often looking to fill temporary contracts.

The work/tourist visa is for working up to a maximum of half the time you are here.
Do ensure that the tourist thing is done for at least half the time, keeps the gobermint happy and you get to see Oz. Some work the whole time and then apply for a tourist visa .. and don't get the new visa, result - they don't see Oz.
So if possible get the high paying temporary contract job for say 2~3 months in Melbourne... then I'd move elsewhere in the country to see some of it ... a month or two to somewhere else. Get another high paying temporary contract job for say 2~3 months in another place or the other, let the job chose the place?

Tony is correct
The first question a local employer will ask for is the permission to work visa. So its best to look for work once she is here.
Melbourne is a pretty boring place to stay. Its much more beautiful in Sydney and further up in Queensland.
If she plans to ride anywhere she will need a separate license for motorcycles or the equivalent from her home country. A standard car license is not enough.
Yes, January is peak casual work time for students before the new academic year starts in Feb/March.
Stay away from fruit picking. Its a criminal owned industry and remember to only accept work at the legal wage rate, otherwise she may be mixed up in a police prosecution etc as a witness. And that could take months.

If her English is fairly decent, I'm sure she could put her experience of working with fine wines and chocolates to use on the Mornington Peninsula. Job sites as provided above are good but she could even try putting a post on the Peninsula Sisters page on Facebook.

As far as looking for a room to rent goes, I found the following site by far the most useful one around... https://flatmates.com.au/
