Qantas no longer offer this "service" and insist we go through Freight Forwarders, who charge significantly for their expertise. Six months on, most quotes are now at least double what Simon paid.
And then faith in humanity is restored:
Working on the standard crate size of 220 x 120 x 90 cms and about 300 kgs, each …
Collection in Melbourne Metro, if required, by tail lift truck AUD 375.00
Export Documents and Clearance of Carnet(s) AUD198.00
Airfreight to Los Angeles, 792.00 kgs chargeable x AUD3.25 AUD2574.00
Dangerous Goods Checking, Labelling and Documents AUD 275.00
Total, door Melbourne to Airport Los Angeles AUD3422.00
final cost will be determined by the actual dimensions of the crates but this should be very close. There will be costs to land and clear in LA and my associate there will assist with that for you.

that seems rather costly to me. I have previously used CT freight ( from Sydney) and got a quote from them for the current trip which was easily half of the above quote. I decided to try and avoid crating and also found that if you did the dangerous goods certification yourself you were able to leave 3 litres of fuel in the bike which is convenient at the other end. CT freight were happy to arrange clearance at the other end but this was going to cost about $800 per bike involving removal of bikes to storage facility, disposal of crates etc.
It is generally easy to do the paper work at the other end, and you can usually convince the freight people to let you uncrate the bike at the airport, sometimes with a small charge to remove the crate.
Interesting - I just got another quote, that was lower by about $100; how long ago did you freight bikes out?
Note that the price is VERY dependent on EXACT size - a few centimeters plus or minus can make a big difference.
We shipped out in May this year. I do not know if CT Freight have an office in Melbourne but they gave us a very reasonable quote to fly to San Fran, around $1000 each bike as approximate on weight and anticipated box size. We used them in 2010 to ship the same bikes to Tokyo and at that time we were charged $750 for each bike. Have just received a quote from Buenos Aires to Sydney for $4620 and from Santiago for $3810 so prices vary significantly.
