XT 600E larger rear wheel rim problems

Hi there
I’ve got a 1998 XT 600E and want to get the rear wheel on it re-built from a standard 17 x 2.5 to a 17 x 4.25. I then want to put on a 150/70 tyre. However, I have read on the internet (not on here) that the rear tyre will rub against the swinging arm. Is this correct? Does anyone out there have experience of this? Should I use a 150/60 tyre to avoid this? Hope to hear soon as I need to go ahead and get the wheels built - thanks

My mate uses a 4.25" rear rim and a 160/60-17 tire, and says there's still like 5mm clearance on each side.

I have a 4.25 rim and 150/70 on one of my older XT's, and they have a bit less room than the steel arms.

i run a 150 17 on my 600E supermoto, no problems, though its a semi slick sport tire.

if its a knobbie with big knobs sticking out, it might be tight...

I brought my 600 six months ago. Its great and I luv riding it. You guys have answered all my questions about tire size. 4.25 rim and 160/60/17. Any tips regarding rims, spokes and tire type? Avon Distanzia seems to get a lot of good reviews.

What will you be doing with it mostly, that will dictate what tires to look at . I run Shrinko 705's for mostly street but can take some offroad, though limited due to width of tire, 150/70/18

and 110/80/19 front ,

Spokes I use ,Buchanan Spokes - Rims , I get stainless spokes/stainless nipples , but plated brass nipples will work fine.
